Google's search market share hits record low, while Bing's share hits record high - but doubts still raised

According to data from the well-known statistics website Statcounter , Google's search engine market share has hit an all-time low. However, the data, which had previously fluctuated in decimal fractions, suddenly fluctuated by nearly 4% in a single month, suggesting that there may have been discrepancies with the past data collection stage.

Below is the data on global search engine market share from April 2023 to April 2024, as shown by Statcounter. We can see that Google's share has dropped sharply from 91.38% to 86.94% in one month. On the other hand, Bing has shown abnormal growth, expanding its share from 3.35% to 5.82%.

According to Statcounter's FAQ , Statcounter does search engine tracking based on referrals, and has set up a mechanism for Statcounter to track users when they search on a search engine, open a page, and that page contains the Statcounter code.

Pete, an AI expert who reported that 'Google's market share in the US is at its lowest since 2009,' said, 'I think there's something wrong with the data. Statcounter apparently tracks referrals from search engines, but if it's dropped so much, it's possible that Google has made some changes to its referral tracking.'

Pete added, 'AI has recently added features to summarize pages, but these are not included in the numbers. I don't think the idea that ChatGPT and Perplexity are eroding Google is entirely correct.'
