AI summary is a feature that displays an AI-generated 'summary of search results' at the top of the search results. In the example below, when searching for 'Celebrations when unable to attend a wedding,' the AI answers the question in natural language above the search results that show sites related to the question.
'Since launching AI summaries in May and expanding outside the US in August, the feedback we've received has been very positive. People love using AI summaries and find the search results more helpful. So now, in our biggest expansion to date, we're launching AI summaries in over 100 countries and making them accessible in even more languages, so you can search in a whole new way for any question,' said Srinivasan Cheenu Venkachari, vice president of search quality. According to Venkachari, the expansion to over 100 countries means that more than 1 billion users around the world will use AI summaries every month.
Hema Budaraju, senior director of search product management at Google, told Mashable, 'AI summaries can be better than what you see on the search page. AI summaries are not meant to completely replace standard Google search, but rather as a starting point for further investigation to quickly address more complex, nuanced questions or questions that don't have an immediate answer. So they may not appear for simple questions that can be answered satisfactorily on the search results page, but will be added to searches where they are thought to add value.' In fact, when a marketing company investigated the appearance rate of AI summaries in the early stages of their release, it was reported that the overall appearance rate dropped sharply from 84% to 15% within one month of their release, and that the appearance rate changed depending on the genre of the search.
Although the overall occurrence rate of 'AI summary' in Google search results has dropped sharply from 84% to 15%, it remains high at 63% in healthcare-related results - GIGAZINE
According to Google, after testing AI summaries, it was found that users found search results with AI summaries more useful, and that younger users aged 18 to 24 were more interested in AI summaries. It has also been reported that users stayed on Google longer even if they did not click on the AI summary answer. Mashable said, 'We can expect this to mean that people are becoming more cautious and should thoroughly double-check information provided by trusted sources.'
You can check the regions where AI-driven summaries are available on the Search Labs and Experimental Countries and Regions page. At the time of writing, the AI-driven summaries are available in seven languages: English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, and in over 120 countries and regions.
