Google's AI-powered summary updated to Gemini 2.0 to tackle tougher tasks

In May 2024, Google implemented the 'AI Overview ' feature, which allows users to search for any information on the Internet, and from August 2024, it will also support Japanese. On March 5, 2025, Google announced that this 'AI Overview' has been updated to Gemini 2.0 .

The 'AI Summary' feature, implemented in May 2024, allows users to quickly find information and explore various information on the Internet. For example, if a user searches for 'how to remove wrinkles from clothes,' an AI-generated explanation of how to remove wrinkles will be shown. This 'AI Summary' feature will be available in Japanese in August 2024.

On March 5, 2025, Google announced that this 'AI-powered overview' has been updated to Gemini 2.0, which will enable it to tackle difficult problems including coding, advanced mathematics, and multi-modal queries.

According to Google, it will be able to provide faster and higher quality responses to these types of queries, and it also says that you'll see 'AI-driven summaries' more frequently.

Google also announced that it has begun testing a new AI search feature called 'AI Mode,' which is an extension of 'AI Overview' that features more advanced reasoning, thinking, and multimodal capabilities.

Regarding 'AI mode,' it was reported in February 2025 that internal testing was being conducted.

According to Stein, in AI mode, Gemini 2.0 will perform multiple related searches based on user instructions and provide information to the user using the latest information from the Internet and Google's information systems.

At the time of writing, the Gemini 2.0 updated 'AI Overview' is available only in the U.S. Also, the 'AI Mode' is only available to Google One AI Premium Plan subscribers who live in the U.S.
