Tesla Cybertruck recalled due to accelerator pedal defect, all Cybertrucks shipped so far affected

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced a recall of all 3,878 Cybertrucks shipped so far by Tesla, Elon Musk's electric car maker, which began deliveries at the end of November 2023 , citing a fault with the accelerator pedal that poses the risk of drivers being involved in a collision.

A defect in the Cybertruck's accelerator pedal was reported around the third week of April 2024. Specifically, the accelerator pedal cover would come off and get caught in the seams of the footwell, causing the pedal to remain pressed down.

To address the issue, Tesla has reportedly temporarily halted shipments of the Cybertruck, with Musk explaining on his X account that 'no injuries or accidents have been reported as a result of this defect, and the suspension of shipments was taken out of an abundance of caution.'

Tesla has reported the issue to NHTSA and explains that no crashes or injuries have occurred as a result of the accelerator pedal defect. Tesla explained that it received a report of the accelerator pedal defect on March 31, 2024, and then received two more notices on April 3. Furthermore, when Tesla conducted its own tests after that, it discovered that the defect occurred because 'an unauthorized change had been made to the accelerator pedal, using a lubricant (soap) to help attach the pad components to the pedal, and the residual lubricant reduced the pad's ability to hold onto the pedal.'

Tesla has announced that it will replace or rework the accelerator pedals on all existing Cybertrucks that have already been shipped, explaining to NHTSA that it has 'begun manufacturing Cybertrucks with new accelerator pedals and is repairing vehicles that are in transit or stored in distribution centers.'
