According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is a problem with the software used to detect when the hood latch on Tesla vehicles is unlatched, which could cause the hood to open completely while driving and block the driver's view.

The issue was reported by some customers in March 2024, and Tesla identified it as being caused by 'deformed hood latch switches manufactured in China by Magna Closures Co Ltd.' in April 2024.

The vehicles subject to this recall are as follows: NHTSA has announced that the total number of vehicles subject to this recall is '1,849,638.'
- Model 3 manufactured between September 21, 2020 and June 2, 2024
- Model S manufactured between January 26, 2021 and July 15, 2024
- Model X manufactured between August 18, 2021 and July 15, 2024
- Model Y manufactured between January 9, 2020 and July 15, 2024

This recall can be fixed with a software update for the vehicles, and Tesla will roll out a software update from mid-June 2024 that will 'properly detect when the hood latch is undone and warn the driver to stop the vehicle and close the hood.'

After the recall was announced, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted, 'Tesla's Model Y has achieved its highest safety score ever!', citing an article that stated the Model Y achieved the highest safety score in 2022 in the European automobile safety assessment ' Euro NCAP ,' promoting the safety of Tesla vehicles.
