According to a report submitted by Tesla to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall is due to a software glitch in the rearview camera screen, which causes the screen to go blank for six to eight seconds after the driver puts the vehicle in reverse.

In the US, rearview mirror screens must be activated within two seconds of putting the car in reverse.

'A delay in the rearview camera display may affect the driver's rearward visibility and increase the risk of a collision,' Tesla said in the report.

Tesla identified this issue through an internal investigation on September 12, 2024, and decided to recall the vehicles based on the results of an evaluation conducted up until the 19th.

Tesla said it has received 45 complaints and four field reports related to the defect, but no crashes or fatalities have been reported so far.

The recall applies to 27,185 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023 and September 14, 2024, which essentially covers the entire production period to date, multiple media outlets have pointed out.

This is the fifth recall for the 2024 Cybertruck. First, 2,193,869 Cybertrucks were recalled in February 2024 for an issue where the anti-lock braking system warning light was too small to read. Then, in April, 3,878 Cybertrucks were recalled for an accelerator pedal malfunction.

In addition, in June 2024, approximately 12,000 Cybertrucks were recalled in succession due to defects in the vehicle's wipers and trunk.

Tesla has already rolled out a free update to fix the issue, and owners of affected Cybertrucks will receive a letter in the mail about the matter on November 25, 2024.
