The first time I noticed the importance of compatibility between soldier types was in the stage where the Hunter, a soldier type that attacks with bows and arrows, made its debut. You can get a good idea of what it's like in the video below.

In this battle, we tried to pit an enemy unit of 'Soldiers' against an allied unit mainly composed of 'Hunters,' but we were unable to land a decisive blow, so we switched to a different unit and continued the battle.
However, that doesn't mean Hunters are a weak military branch; they demonstrate their true worth with 'Arrow Rain,' which allows them to attack enemy forces without engaging in combat.
In direct combat, compatibility has an even stronger effect. For example, the enemy's 'Thief' soldier has a passive skill called 'Evade' that allows them to avoid attacks, so your attacks will not hit them.
However, the Hunter has a skill called 'Eagle Eye' that ensures that his attacks hit the target, and since they cannot be evaded, he can easily defeat the Thief.
In order to deal with the upcoming Thief, we decided to hire Hunters as Mercenaries to increase our fighting power. Mercenaries are different from the unique characters who join our side during the story, and you can freely customize their appearance and voice.
Some classes have class traits that are always active regardless of skills, etc., and the Hunter's class trait doubles his attack power against flying monsters, making him effective in battles against the Griffon Knights, a type of soldier that attacks from the air.
Just as each Hunter soldier type has clearly defined strengths and weaknesses, in Unicorn Overlord compatibility with each soldier type matters, so if you use the soldiers well, it is possible to unilaterally annihilate enemy troops.

In order to take advantage of the strengths of each type of soldier, it is important not only to organize your troops into advantageous battles, but also to use different 'tactics.' You can see how tactics are used in battle from the link below.
When I checked the enemies at the start of one stage, I noticed that there were multiple enemy squads made up of three characters. More enemies mean more of a threat, but on closer inspection, I noticed that two of the three were lined up in a row, one behind the other.
So I decided to change my strategy. First, I changed the equipment of the 'Knight' soldier, who is advantageous against infantry soldiers. This weapon has a passive skill called 'True Thrust' that penetrates enemies lined up in front and behind.
True Thrust has a guaranteed hit effect, so initially it was set to target 'scout' enemies like thieves, but here we change the conditions so that it attacks enemies lined up in front and behind. However, if it's left like this, it won't attack if there are no enemies lined up in front and behind, so we'll add another strategy.
In the end, I came up with a strategy like this. This way, the game should battle with the following logic: 'If there are enemies lined up in front and behind, attack them both at the same time with True Thrust, otherwise attack the scout who is difficult to avoid, and if neither of these apply, attack the enemy with the lowest HP with Assault Lance (a powerful single-target attack).'
When I actually clashed with an enemy unit, it killed two of them at once, just as I had hoped. Knights have double the attack power against infantry types, which gives them an advantage, but you can make the most of their abilities by changing your strategy. You also need to take into account the formation, that is, the placement of your characters. For example, Soldiers with spears can also perform piercing attacks, and their 'Long Thrust' skill deals great damage to cavalry troops such as Knights.
However, by placing the highly defensive 'Hoplitanium' troops in the front row and not lining up in front or behind, the enemy soldiers were unable to take advantage of their strengths as their piercing attacks could not hit the knights in the back row.

Unicorn Overlord is a simulation RPG in which you make full use of formations and tactics, but it also has elements of 'real-time strategy (RTS)' in which the battlefield changes every moment.
In particular, each stage has a time limit, and if you do not complete your objective quickly within the time limit you will be defeated, so it is important to move multiple units simultaneously and advance efficiently.
The speed at which a unit moves is determined mainly by the movement speed of each character and the type of troop leader. For example, this unit is led by a knight named Joseph, so its movement type is cavalry.
This enabled Joseph's men to quickly penetrate the enemy's base.
On the other hand, the Hoplite units, known for their heavy armor, were left behind on the battlefield and were unable to perform well.
Units led by the aforementioned Griffon Knight and this character, O'Creath (Feather Sword class), can fly, so they can cross the river like this and attack the enemy lookout post directly.
However, it is not always a good idea to choose a character with high mobility as a leader. Hodrick the Hoplite, who was not very effective earlier, halves damage from bow and arrow shots (red circle), so he is suitable as a leader of a unit that will run through the battlefield where lookout posts are keeping a watchful eye.
If multiple units are adjacent to each other, you can switch units to fight with the unit that has the advantage, so it is generally a good idea to move multiple units together. However, if the units are packed together, they may be wiped out by the enemy hunter's arrow rain mentioned above, or they may not be able to respond to unexpected ambushes, so it may be better to spread them out.

As mentioned above, Unicorn Overlord is a game where you can enjoy deep battles where various strategies are intertwined. Some people may think, 'It seems troublesome to think that it is too complicated...', but if you actively use Joseph, a level 20 helper character, from the beginning, you won't have to worry about losing.
Although I'm playing on the 'NORMAL' difficulty level this time, you can change the difficulty level at any time from the options settings, and there's no penalty for lowering the difficulty level, so I also recommend setting the difficulty to 'CASUAL' and simply enjoying the story.
