When I tried the green matcha curry, I was surprised at how authentic it was. ``Ito Kyuemon JR Uji Station Branch''

Most of the foods made with matcha are sweets such as soft serve ice cream and Uji Kintoki, but there are also shops where you can enjoy curry and soba made with matcha. At Kyuemon Ito's JR Uji Station store, you can try `` Uji Tea Aigake Curry '' using matcha and hojicha, `` Uji Matcha Curry Udon '' using matcha, etc., so you can see how it tastes when you actually eat it. I checked to see if that's the case.

Ito Kyuemon's JR Uji Station store is located right near JR Uji Station.

Arrived at JR Uji Station. Leave the station from the south exit.

When you exit the station, you can see Ito Kyuemon's JR Uji Station store across the rotary.

The storefront of Ito Kyuemon JR Uji Station store looks like this.

In the showcase set up next to the entrance, the desired ``Uji Tea Aigake Curry'' and ``Uji Matcha Curry Udon'' were being promoted.

When you enter the store, you will first see a sales corner selling tea leaves and products made with tea.

The eating and drinking corner is at the back of the store.

The page with 'Uji Tea Aigake Curry' and 'Uji Matcha Curry Udon' on the menu looks like this. This time, in addition to ``Uji Tea Aigake Curry (1290 yen including tax)'' and ``Uji Matcha Curry Udon (1090 yen including tax)'', I ordered ``Nishin Soba'' (1190 yen including tax) using matcha soba.

◆Uji tea Aigake curry
This is what Uji tea Aigake curry looks like. The green curry on the left is matcha curry, and the dark brown curry on the right is hojicha curry.

The matcha curry is deep green and looks like it uses matcha. From the appearance, I imagined that the curry flavor would be mild and the matcha would be strong, but when I actually tasted it, it tasted like a sweet and spicy curry that blended the umami of meat and vegetables. The taste and aroma of matcha is at a level that you can feel faintly if you taste it as if you are looking for the taste of matcha, and if you close your eyes and eat it without knowing that it is matcha curry, you will not notice that it is matcha.

The spiciness of the curry is weak, and the umami of the vegetables and meat is the main flavor, and you can also taste the toppings' vegetables and chicken. Contrary to its appearance, the taste of matcha was not very noticeable and the curry was of high quality.

Hojicha curry is a sweet keema curry the moment you put it in your mouth, and as the sweetness gradually weakens, you can feel the unique aroma and bitterness of hojicha. An interesting point is that as you eat while enjoying the sweetness and flavor of hojicha, the spiciness gradually increases. I felt that the 'tea flavor' was stronger in the hojicha curry than in the matcha curry.

◆Uji matcha curry udon
The Uji matcha curry udon came with tea leaf tsukudani.

It looks like this. Green curry soup contains green udon noodles, fried tofu, mochi, kamaboko, fu, and green onions.

When you drink the soup, at first it's a sweet and spicy curry udon soup with the scent of dashi, and in the aftertaste you can feel the fine bitterness of matcha. After swallowing, the spiciness that hits your tongue and the bitterness of the matcha coexist, so it's a fun soup to enjoy while checking the taste of the matcha with each sip.

Udon is a thin type of noodles with a firm texture. When you slurp the udon noodles, the soup and air enter your mouth together, so you can enjoy the flavor and aroma of matcha more intensely than when you drink the soup alone. The green soup and green udon look like they have a strong matcha flavor, but the taste was mainly sweet and spicy curry udon, with the taste and aroma of matcha added to it without getting in the way.

◆Herring soba
The herring soba came with tea leaf tsukudani and yuba.

Herring soba looks like this. It contains green soba noodles, herring, and green onions in brown soup stock.

The soup stock is said to be a combination of bonito and kelp, giving it a strong umami flavor and a slight sourness.

The noodles are made with Uji matcha, buckwheat flour, and wheat flour. When you eat it, it seems that the ratio of wheat flour is high, and the chewy texture is characteristic. However, I can't really taste the matcha flavor. The soup stock and chewy noodles go great together, but the matcha flavor is quite weak, so if you're looking for matcha, we recommend ordering other items as well.

Herring is soft, sweet and meaty down to the bone. The taste of matcha was weak, but as a herring soba, it was so delicious that I could eat it as many times as I wanted.

I ate three types of ``Uji tea curry,'' ``Uji matcha curry udon,'' and ``herring soba,'' but none of them insisted on matcha, but rather high-quality curry, curry udon, and herring soba. It was an enjoyable finish. The store also sells retort foods such as Uji matcha curry and hojicha curry, so if you like them, you can buy them and take them as souvenirs.
