On January 19, 2024, AWS announced plans to invest 2.26 trillion yen by 2027 to expand cloud computing infrastructure, which is the backbone of AI services.

AWS explains the purpose of this investment as 'to meet growing customer demand,' and says it will spend the money to expand its facilities in Tokyo and Osaka.

AWS has already invested 1.51 trillion yen in Japan between 2011 and 2022, strengthening data centers that process and store customer data and perform general operations. This investment significantly exceeds past investments and is expected to further strengthen existing partnerships such as Asahi Group, Marubeni, and Nomura Holdings, and promote growth in the AI field in Japan.

Tadao Nagasaki, President of AWS Japan, said of this investment plan, ``We will support Japanese customers' data utilization, create various economic ripple effects, and contribute to Japan's growth.''

The Japanese government is committed to AI development, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reportedly meeting directly with the CEOs of NVIDIA , TSMC , OpenAI , and more over the past year.
