A review of the appearance of the portable gaming PC 'Steam Deck OLED', which is equipped with an organic EL display and weighs 40g, and a comparison with the liquid crystal display version of Steam Deck.

' Steam Deck OLED ' is a portable gaming PC developed by Valve, which operates the PC gaming platform 'Steam'. Unlike the previous model

Steam Deck (Steam Deck LCD), Steam Deck OLED is equipped with an organic EL display, and there are also changes such as longer battery life and lighter body weight. I was able to borrow a sample of such a Steam Deck OLED, so I first took a closer look at its appearance.

◆1: Steam Deck OLED opening ceremony
Steam Deck OLED arrived in a cardboard box like the one below.

Inside the cardboard box was a power adapter and Steam Deck OLED.

Steam Deck OLED comes with a black case.

When I opened the case, Steam Deck OLED appeared.

A cleaning cloth was also included in the case.

The power adapter box looks like this.

Inside the box was a power adapter and instructions.

The power adapter output is up to 45W.

This is what the Steam Deck OLED looks like from the front. The analog sticks are arranged symmetrically. The square button located at the bottom of the analog stick is a trackpad, the STEAM button at the bottom left allows you to access the home screen, etc., and the quick access button at the bottom right allows you to check notifications etc. The OLED display measures 7.4 inches, has a resolution of 1200 x 800 pixels, a maximum brightness of 1000 nits, and a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz.

There are a total of 4 customizable buttons, 2 on each side of the back.

The grip is thick. There are no buttons on the left side.

There are no buttons on the right side either.

The top has a volume control button, headphone jack, cooling vents, USB-C port, and power button. In addition, L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons are installed on both sides.

There is a microSD card slot in the part surrounded by a red frame on the bottom.

The dimensions of the Steam Deck OLED are 298mm wide x 117mm high x 49mm thick. It looks like this when lined up with Nintendo Switch to make it easier to understand the size.

The actual weight was 632g.

632g sounds heavy, but since the grip is thick and firm, it doesn't feel that heavy.

When you grip the grip, your middle and ring fingers will naturally touch the back button. The back button cannot be pressed down without applying a certain amount of force, so it is unlikely that a situation where the back button will respond even though you just squeezed it will occur.

An editorial staff member who regularly plays games using controllers such as

DUALSHOCK 4 and DualSense said, ``When playing Nintendo Switch in handheld mode, I'm concerned about the uncomfortable grip, but the Steam Deck OLED has a firm grip, so I don't feel any discomfort.'' He expressed his impressions.

◆3: Comparing the appearance of Steam Deck OLED and Steam Deck LCD
The Steam Deck OLED (top) and Steam Deck LCD (bottom) have the same dimensions and button placement.

The color scheme is slightly different; the Steam Deck OLED (left) has a black analog stick axis and the ABXY text is gray, while the Steam Deck LCD (right) has a white analog stick axis and the ABXY text is also white. .

On the back, you won't find any difference at all. There is a plastic part attached to the center of the Steam Deck LCD (bottom), but this was attached to the sample machine and is not attached to the actual product.

The grip size is also the same. The side appearance is also the same.

The other side looks exactly the same.

The button arrangement on the top is also the same, but the power button on the Steam Deck OLED (above) has changed to orange.

The bottom appearance is the same.

When measuring the weight, Steam Deck OLED (left) was 632g and Steam Deck LCD (right) was 676g. Steam Deck LCD has plastic parts attached to the back, so an accurate comparison cannot be made, but it can be seen that it is more than 40g lighter.

We will be publishing an article soon that examines how the gaming experience on the Steam Deck OLED has changed due to the inclusion of an organic EL display.

[to be continued]

In addition, Steam Deck OLED can be purchased from the official distributor KOMODO. The price is 84,800 yen including tax for the 512GB built-in storage model and 99,800 yen including tax for the 1TB built-in storage model.
