A record of modifying Apple's genuine mouse 'Magic Mouse' to support USB-C and make it easier to grip and improve usability

The genuine mouse '

Magic Mouse ' sold by Apple has a charging port for Lightning on the back of the mouse, so it cannot be charged while using the mouse. Therefore, engineer Ivan Kuleshov modified the Magic Mouse to create an easy-to-grip Magic Mouse that supports charging via USB-C.

The back of Magic Mouse is equipped with a charging port that supports Apple's proprietary Lightning. Therefore, when users want to charge Magic Mouse, they have to stop their work and turn the mouse upside down to charge, which is very inconvenient.

Mr. Kuleshov first created a number of cases using a 3D printer in order to modify the thin Magic Mouse into an ergonomic and easy-to-grip shape.

In addition, Mr. Kuleshov modified the board and battery and switched the charging terminal from Lightning to USB-C. In addition, by attaching the cable to the battery of Magic Mouse, which is designed to turn off when the charging cable is connected and not accept cursor movements or clicks, we were able to directly charge the battery and operate it while charging.

In order to perform normal mouse operations while housing the thin Magic Mouse in a thick case, it is necessary to disassemble the mouse into upper and lower halves. Kuleshov then sandwiched a 3D-printed spacer between the top half, which handles tasks such as clicking, and the bottom half, which houses the sensors needed to move the mouse pointer, making it possible to perform both tasks at the same time. did.

Below is an image of the completed modified Magic Mouse. Although the traditional Lightning port remains on the bottom, a newly added USB-C port is installed on the front of the mouse, allowing operation while charging.

Below is a picture of the actually modified Magic Mouse being used. The same operations as regular Magic Mouse are possible.

Mr. Kuleshov said, ``The specifications and details of the modified Magic Mouse created this time will be published on GitHub in the near future.'' In addition, in the future, they are planning to install a multi-colored light and an additional battery inside the mouse to make the mouse they created glow.
