A fierce man who made his own repairable AirPods Pro charging case and made it open source appears

Hardware hacker

Exploring the Simulation , Ken Pillonel , who replaced the iPhone with a USB Type-C port , created and open sourced a charging case for AirPods Pro that can be repaired by the user.

The charging case for AirPods Pro that can be easily disassembled and repaired by Pillonel is a genuine charging case that is disassembled into pieces and the white housing part is replaced with a self-made one output by a 3D printer. Basically, the internal electronic devices and hinges are used as they are from the genuine AirPods Pro.

The reason why repairs are easier is because the necessary parts are fixed with screws and nuts instead of adhesive.

Pillonel said, ``The main difficulty with the original charging case is that it is difficult to disassemble the white plastic housing. Basically, the housing is sticky with adhesive, so let's disassemble In most cases, the case will be permanently deformed,' he told ArsTechnica.

Accurately measure the housing of the charging case with a laser marking machine, digital camera, digital caliper, etc.

Then create a 3D model of each part.

Output each part with a 3D printer.

The generated parts look like this.

The case parts have a space for storing nuts and a hole for passing screws. As a result, it is possible to fix each part with screws and nuts.

After that, just assemble using the AirPods Pro case hinges and electronic parts.

In an interview with The Verge, Pillonel revealed that he uses a small amount of glue even in his home-made charging case. The adhesive is said to be used to fix the magnets, 'Unlike Apple's concrete-like green adhesive, the self-made charging case has a cyanoacrylate adhesive that can be easily removed by soaking it in acetone. I'm using drugs,' he said.

Mr. Pillonel made his own charging case for the 1st generation AirPods Pro, but the reason is ``I have knowledge when remodeling the AirPods Pro charging case to support USB-C , and it is necessary to model all new components from scratch. Because there was no

Pillonel said, ``We have no plans to modify the charging case to make it easier to repair in the same way for other models. It's because it's improved.More importantly, we plan to make it possible to repair the AirPods itself.' However, it seems that it is very difficult to modify the AirPods body so that anyone can easily repair it, and Pillonel explains that the reason is that ``the earphones are very small and there are few tools available''.

In addition, Mr. Pillonel publishes the model data of each part used to create a self-made charging case on Patreon for free.
