Following Alder Lake, the 12th generation Core processor, and Raptor Lake, the 13th generation Core processor, Intel has released ``Performance-cores (P cores)'' that emphasize performance and ``Efficient-cores (E cores)'' that emphasize power efficiency. We announced 'Meteor Lake', a 14th generation Core processor equipped with two types of cores. Meteor Lake will be the first processor to use Foveros, a 3D stacking technology, and Intel 4 , which was announced in June 2022 as Intel's new process node.
Tim Wilson, Intel's vice president of design engineering group and general manager of SoC design, called Meteor Lake 'the biggest architectural change in the past 40 years' and '(Meteor Lake) lays the foundation for PC innovation.' I spoke.
Meteor Lake uses a design that Intel calls disaggregation, where core components are divided into separate tiles on the SoC. Meteor Lake has four tiles:
Computing tiles: New microarchitecture with E and P cores built on Intel 4
SoC Tile: Low Power Island E-Core, NPU, Wi-Fi 6E/7, Native HDMI 2.1, 8K HDR AV1 Support
Graphic tiles: integrated Intel Arc architecture
IO Tile: Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe Gen5 (possibly also compatible with Thunderbolt 5)
SoC tiles can turn off certain parts when not in use. For example, media IP, including support for video playback, has traditionally resided on integrated GPUs. However, Intel processors don't require that much power just to play videos, so the media IP has been moved to the main SoC tile instead. When streaming video or playing local video files, all the necessary components reside on the SoC tile, which eliminates the need to run graphics tiles, significantly reducing power consumption.
Alder Lake and Raptor Lake were characterized by being composed of E cores and P cores. These cores have also been improved in Meteor Lake, but they have been moved to new compute tiles. Meanwhile, the new low-power island E-Core in the SoC tile consumes even less power than the E-Core in the Compute tile and provides computing power for systems running in the Windows background. This is the third core. Combined with the updated Windows 11 Thread Director optimizations, this allows the OS to handle which cores are assigned to which tasks. Specifically, when the PC is idle and no core tasks are running, the low-power island E cores will take over tasks, and the P cores and E cores on the compute tile will stop working.
Furthermore, Meteor Lake is equipped with an integrated NPU (Neural Processing Unit). The NPU is responsible for offloading AI tasks such as webcam background blur, microphone on-the-fly noise removal, and localized large-scale language models (LLMs). This allows you to perform everyday Windows tasks without degrading the performance of the P and E cores. In addition, the NPU will significantly reduce power consumption and contribute to increasing the efficiency of Meteor Lake as a whole. Since Meteor Lake will all be equipped with an NPU, technology media Windows Central notes that it may help promote the spread of apps equipped with AI functions.
Furthermore, the graphic tiles use Intel's integrated GPU, Intel Arc. Intel Arc can achieve up to twice the performance of Iris Xe, the integrated GPU of Alder Lake and Raptor Lake. According to Windows Central, in a demonstration that Intel conducted for the media in August 2023, it was possible to stably run Forza gameplay at full HD (1080p) at 60fps using Intel Arc. , states, ``With the integrated GPU, you can expect higher performance than ever before.''
Meteor Lake features the new Foveros, which consists of individual tiles manufactured across multiple process nodes using high-density, high-bandwidth, low-power interconnects. Since the different tiles of graphics, SoC, and computing are built separately, it is possible to bring wafers procured from outside the company to Intel's factory and combine them into one processor.
Intel has also released a reference design for Meteor Lake, which includes a new dual-channel flow hyperbaric with dual-outlet high-performance quiet fans. If OEMs adopt this, Meteor Lake-equipped PCs will run so quietly that someone from 5 feet away will be able to hear them, even with the fans turned up to maximum. Intel claims that it will only emit a whispering sound (30dB).
Please note that this announcement is just an overview of Meteor Lake, and more specific processor types and selling prices have not been disclosed.
In addition, Intel announced that the first processor of the 5th generation model of Xeon, a family of processors for servers and workstations, `` Emerald Rapids '' will be released on December 14, 2023.

In addition, it has been announced that 'Sierra Forest' equipped with 288 E cores will be released from the Xeon family. Sierra Forest employs CPU chiplets manufactured on Intel 3 processes, and has a flexible architecture that can scale to higher cores when combined with I/O chiplets based on Intel 7 nodes.
Sierra Forest can support up to three core-packed computing chiplets, so 288 E-cores is 'not surprising,' technology media Tom's Hardware notes. In addition, since Intel can pack up to 144 E cores into one chiplet, there is a possibility that a processor equipped with up to 432 E cores will appear.
In addition, 'Granite Rapids', which is scheduled to appear as part of the Xeon family, was also announced. Granite Rapids features industry-leading, high-performance P-cores that deliver superior AI performance compared to other CPUs and deliver 2-2 to 30% performance compared to 4th generation Xeon for AI workloads. It is said to be 3 times better.
