The Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2 is an SoC developed for AI PCs. It integrates CPU and GPU tiles on a single die and places memory close to each other to reduce latency and improve performance.

There are nine SKUs for the Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2, and their specifications are as shown in the table below. Regardless of the SKU, the CPU has a total of eight cores: four P cores (high-performance cores) and four LP-E cores (power-saving, high-efficiency cores). Hyper-threading is not supported at the design stage, and the number of threads is eight. The graphics are equipped with Intel Arc, and the memory is equipped with 32GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X-8533MT/s. In addition, the I/O has been shifted from PCIe Gen 4 in the previous generation to PCIe Gen 5. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.

At the launch event, Intel presented five selling points for the Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2: 'fastest CPU core,' 'fastest built-in GPU,' 'high AI performance,' 'most efficient x86 architecture,' and 'unparalleled compatibility.'

Regarding the CPU core, the P-core, codenamed 'Lion Cove,' is equipped with up to 12MB of shared L3 cache, and is said to have 15% improved power efficiency, 10% improved performance per die area, and 14% improved instruction execution per cycle compared to the previous generation through AI-based power management.

Codenamed 'Skymont,' the E-core features up to 4MB of shared L2 cache, doubles AI throughput, improves branch prediction, and executes 68% more instructions per cycle.

The built-in GPU is an Intel Arc GPU with eight Xe2 cores, an 8MB cache, and a 64-vector engine.

Intel claims that it has finally overtaken AMD and completely defeated Qualcomm, and that the Core Ultra 9 288V, the top model of the Core Ultra mobile processor series 2, has a frame rate during games at 1080p medium quality that is 16% higher than the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and 68% higher on average than Qualcomm's

Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-84-100), which was the launch partner of Microsoft's AI PC ' Copilot+ PC '. It is also said to be 30% higher than the Meteor Lake generation Intel Core Ultra 7 155H.

Below is a comparison of frame rates and power consumption while playing '

Dota 2 ' on the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (left), Core Ultra 9 288V (center), and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite (right).

Intel emphasizes that the power efficiency of the Core Ultra 9 288V is 35% higher than the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and more than twice that of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.

According to

the UL Procyon battery consumption benchmark, the Core Ultra 9 288V recorded a longer battery life than the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.

The NPU's performance has increased fourfold from the previous generation, and the AI processing performance of the entire processor, including the NPU and GPU, has reached a maximum of 120 TOPS.

The GPU's computing performance is said to be up to 67 TOPS thanks to

Xe Matrix eXtensions (XMX) for Intel Arc Graphics.

When the NPU performance of the Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2 was measured using

Geekbench AI , the score was 20% higher than that of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.

In addition, Intel is promoting the fact that while the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite uses the Arm architecture, the Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2 is based on the x86 architecture, which makes it highly compatible with a variety of software that applies AI technology.

The Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2 is said to reduce power consumption by up to 50% while running applications compared to the previous generation Intel Core Ultra 7 155H.

At the announcement event, Intel also demonstrated '

AI Playground ,' an AI starter app optimized for Intel Arc GPUs, running locally on a device equipped with a Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2.

It was also announced that notebook PCs equipped with Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2 will be certified as Microsoft's AI PC, 'Copilot+ PC.'

Devices equipped with Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2 will be released by HP, Acer, MSI, Lenovo, Dell, Samsung, LG, Mouse Computer, Third Wave, Unitcom, etc. In addition, Google will release a Chromebook equipped with Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2.

Copilot+ PCs equipped with Core Ultra Mobile Processor Series 2 will be available for pre-order from September 4, 2024, and will be available in the market from September 24, 2024.
