Review of setting up and drawing on Amazon's 11-inch 2K LCD tablet 'Fire Max 11', which can draw and take notes with a stylus pen and also has fingerprint authentication

The tablet device ' Fire Max 11 ', released by Amazon on June 14, 2023, is the first in the Fire series to support a stylus pen and is equipped with fingerprint authentication, making it a major evolution from the previous Fire series. I actually set up the Fire Mx 11 and tried drawing with a stylus pen and taking photos and movies with the 8-megapixel rear camera.

Setup
When you turn on the Fire Max 11, first select the language. Select 'Japanese' and tap 'CONTINUE'.

Since we will be setting up on Fire Max 11 this time, select 'Set up manually' and tap 'Continue'.

Select the Wi-Fi SSID you want to connect to.

Enter your password and tap 'Continue.'

Enter the email address or phone number you registered with Amazon, enter your Amazon password, and then tap 'Continue.'

Tap 'Continue'.

A movie will play, so tap 'Skip'.

The profile you will use on Fire will be displayed, so tap 'Continue'.

The Fire Max 11 is the first Fire series to be equipped with a fingerprint sensor. To set up fingerprint authentication for unlocking, select 'Fingerprint' and tap 'Continue'.

Select a backup passcode for fingerprint authentication. In this example, select 'PIN', enter a 4-8 digit number, and tap 'Continue'.

As an alternative to fingerprint authentication, enter a four-digit passcode and tap 'Continue.'

Tap 'Agree and continue' to register your fingerprint.

The fingerprint sensor is built into the power button on the right side of the Fire Max 11.

Follow the instructions to place your finger on the power button from different angles.

When the message 'Fingerprint registration completed' appears, it's OK.

Tap 'Continue'.

Tap 'Continue' again.

Enable Alexa. Tap 'Continue'.

Tap Agree and continue.

This time, I decided to postpone enabling Alexa, so I tapped 'Turn off ALEXA.'

This completes the setup. The screen is 2000 x 1200 pixels, with a bezel of about 8 mm from top to bottom to left and right. Fingerprint authentication is quite accurate, and the device is unlocked and the home screen is displayed as soon as you press the power button, so there was no trouble with authentication. In addition, the series of operations can be performed by tapping directly on the screen, as well as with a keyboard and mouse, but the mouse on the keyboard case is quite sensitive and there were some parts that were difficult to operate, so it is recommended to set up the device by tapping directly on the screen.

◆ I tried drawing with a stylus pen
The Fire Max 11 is the first Fire series device to come with a stylus pen that complies with 'Made for Amazon'. The stylus pen is compatible with

the Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) 2.0 standard, and does not require pairing settings. It can run for up to six months on a single AAA battery.

The stylus has a built-in magnet that allows it to be attached to the side of the Fire Max 11.

The following movie shows the actual drawing of lines, pictures and letters on the Fire Max 11 with this stylus. I used '

Drawing Desk ' as the drawing app. There is no protective sheet on the screen of the Fire Max 11. The pen tip is smooth and does not catch. There was a slight lag between placing the pen tip and drawing the line, and the accuracy was not high enough to feel like 'writing on paper with a pencil or pen,' but I got the impression that it was enough to write a little doodle or memo.

◆ I took a picture with my camera
The rear camera can take photos of 3264 x 2448 pixels = about 8 megapixels. Below are the cans and cut sheets photographed with the LUMIX DC-GH5 .

I took a photo using the Fire Max 11's original camera app. The aspect ratio changed due to the UI, so the image looks a bit vertically elongated on the screen.

The actual photo itself is as shown below, and was recorded with the correct aspect ratio. By default, the format of the captured image is

HEIC format. In the following example, a 3264 x 2448 pixel photo has been compressed to 1200 pixels on the long side to reduce the file size.

Flowers blooming in a roadside flowerbed. The photos and movies you take are stored in the Fire Max 11 and are automatically uploaded to Amazon Photo when you connect to Wi-Fi. The built-in storage is 64GB or 128GB, but you can add up to 1TB of storage by purchasing a microSD card separately.

Ramen photographed in a slightly dark restaurant. The photos are not as high-precision and beautiful as those taken with a high-end smartphone or digital camera, but it seems that it can be used for quick snapshots and record-keeping without any problems. However, since it is a tablet, it is obviously larger and heavier than a normal smartphone, so it may be difficult to take it out and take a quick photo.

And below is a 1080p movie shot with the rear camera.

Next time, we plan to actually try out using the Kindle, Amazon Prime, and browsing YouTube, run some benchmark software, and check the battery charging and duration, so stay tuned.

In addition, the stylus pen and keyboard cover set can be ordered for 47,980 yen (tax included) for the 64GB model and 52,980 yen (tax included) for the 128GB model.
