Synology IP camera ``BC500'' actually used as a surveillance camera with ``Surveillance Station'' Review, recording without monthly fee while shooting clearly Permanent storage as long as the free space of NAS allows & you can quickly identify the video you want to see

While there are many surveillance cameras that have restrictions on what they can do for free, such as ``recording storage period is up to the past 30 days,'' Synology IP cameras can be used in combination with Synology NAS to keep recordings as long as the storage remains. 's BC500 . Since I finished

the exterior shooting and setup in the previous article, I tried to check what kind of video can actually be recorded next.

Various setting changes and recording confirmation of BC500 are basically done through '

Surveillance Station ' which is Synology's camera management system. When you access Surveillance Station, the following screen will be displayed, so first click 'IP camera'.

Then the registered BC500 will be displayed. Click the play mark to see the live video.

The image is displayed like this. By default, it records continuously 24 hours a day, so you can go back and check the recordings.

The actual image looks like this. By default, the resolution is 2880 x 1620 and the frame rate is 30 FPS. The audio format is G.711 (8000Hz) and the file format is H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC). The BC500 has a built-in microphone so it can record audio, but it doesn't have a speaker so you can't get sound out of the camera.

Access recordings from the main menu of Surveillance Station. Click on the main menu icon and you will find “Recording” among several functions.

The BC500 saves recordings as one file of 30 minutes by default. This can be changed to 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, 180 minutes, 240 minutes by setting. Recording files can be played, downloaded, shared links, etc. by right-clicking. Click download to try.

Choose to download the complete file or a time-trimmed version of the file. This time, select 'Download complete file' and click 'Download'.

A file in MP4 format will be downloaded. As a reference, the file size of the video recorded this time is about 500 MB for a 30-minute video in the daytime with no movement within the shooting range. 600MB to 900MB when moving objects are reflected. At night, when the video was shot in black and white, it was 100MB to 300MB.

The BC500 is equipped with an IR night vision sensor that automatically switches to black and white photography at night according to the brightness threshold.

The image taken at night looks like this.

Brightness and contrast, saturation, sharpness, and white balance can be adjusted from the setting screen.

Adjustments are reflected immediately, so you can make changes while viewing the video in real time.

You can also set the exposure.

You can change the settings such as the display format of the time stamp and where to display it on the screen.

BC500 is equipped with a motion detection function and leaves a recording as an event when motion is detected. Detection threshold and sensitivity can also be set in detail.

Enable 'Audio Detection' to detect loud or abnormal noise and leave an event.

'Tampering' is detected when the camera's view is blocked or forced to another angle.

When these events are detected, recording files labeled as 'People and Vehicle Detection', 'Motion Detection', etc. will be created.

When you play the recording, it will display what it detected with a red frame. In this case, the bicycles, cars, and people on the screen were surrounded by red frames.

Firmly detects a running scooter. Event-triggered recordings are only recorded “when there is movement,” so you don’t end up with a bunch of endless files showing only parked cars.

In addition to the motion detection function, there is also a function called 'intrusion' that draws a boundary line and triggers an event 'when the boundary line is crossed'. To use it, first select the target as 'people' or 'car' or both and click 'Next'.

Draw a border.

Determine the detection direction. You can set it to be bi-directional to detect whenever the line is crossed, or uni-directional to detect only when the line is crossed on either side. For example, it can be used to detect only people entering the house, not people leaving the house.

I actually checked the video with the setting 'Detect only people entering the house'. The following video is a clip of a constant recording, recording the moment when a person leaves the house and the moment when he/she enters the house.

On the other hand, this is an event recording uploaded without editing. Only the moment a person enters the house is detected and cut out as a single recording file.

You can also schedule the detection of these events. You can set a schedule to detect people and vehicles in the mornings and evenings on weekdays when there is a lot of people coming and going, constant recording during the daytime, and recording only when motion is detected at other times. To set, click the colored box and then drag to select the mass.

You can set up 'privacy masking' to hide things that need to be considered for privacy, such as the license plate number of the house across the street, the entrance, etc., but are within the shooting range of the surveillance camera. To use it, click the + and - marks to add or remove masking, scale it up or down to cover it in the appropriate position, and click 'Apply'.

All recorded files are saved on the drive mounted on the NAS, but only event recordings can be saved on the microSD card mounted on the BC500 main unit. This is 'edge recording'.

However, the maximum capacity of the microSD card that has been confirmed to work is 128GB, which is rather small, so basically it is better to set it to record only when the BC500 is disconnected from the NAS. Recordings in the microSD card will be automatically transferred to the NAS when the network recovers.

Unlike surveillance cameras that manage recorded files in the cloud, the strength of the BC500 is that it can be managed with a Synology NAS. While providing basic functions such as motion detection and masking, it provides a sense of security that leaves clear images regardless of day or night. This is the best product for those who want to keep the cost of managing surveillance cameras as low as possible.

The price of BC500 is 34,243 yen including tax at Amazon.co.jp at the time of article publication.
