YouTube Stories was a feature implemented in 2017 under the name 'Reels' and was only available to accounts with more than 10,000 subscribers. Similar to Instagram's Reels, YouTube Stories are videos that disappear after a certain amount of time, allowing creators to share updates and reveal behind-the-scenes footage of their creations. However, in reality, stories are not very popular on YouTube, and The Verge points out that there are ``few'' creators who post stories. In fact, YouTube itself was not very aggressive in promoting the story.

Meanwhile, on May 26, 2023, YouTube's community manager announced that 'YouTube stories will be abolished in order to prioritize the development of key features such as community posts, short videos, long videos, and live distribution.'

As a result, after June 26, 2023, the option to post new YouTube Stories will no longer be available. In addition, after the abolition, it will expire 7 days after the story is shared, and it will be impossible to watch.

``While we are retiring Stories, we have found that both Community Posts and YouTube Shorts are great alternatives for providing valuable audience connections and conversations,'' YouTube said. Community posts and YouTube shorts will be alternatives to Stories.

Community posts on YouTube are great for sharing quick updates, starting conversations, and promoting your YouTube content to your audience. YouTube points out, ``For creators who use both community posts and stories, community posts are a highly engaged feature that can get many times more comments and likes than stories.''

It also argues that if you want to create short video content or reach new audiences, YouTube shorts are the way to go. In fact, among creators who use both YouTube Shorts and Stories, YouTube explains that, on average, Shorts drive many times more subscribers than Stories.

Regarding the deprecation of Stories, The Verge said, 'YouTube is working to focus the popularity of short-form videos on TikTok's competing feature, YouTube Shorts, and try to persuade traditional long-form video creators to start producing short-form videos as well. In February 2023, YouTube will start distributing advertising revenue from short videos based on its updated monetization plan.' I'm assuming this is one of the reasons for its deprecation.

In order to receive advertising revenue from short videos on YouTube from February 1, 2023, it is necessary to agree to the new regulations by July 10 to continue monetizing on YouTube due to the revision of the partner program-GIGAZINE

In addition, Snapchat was the first to introduce a ``content function that can be viewed with a time limit'' like a story, and after that, various platforms such as Instagram and YouTube have introduced similar functions. However, on some platforms, such as Twitter's fleet, the 'content feature that can be viewed with a time limit' has been abolished without taking root.

Twitter announces that it will end the 'fleet' function where posts disappear in 24 hours - GIGAZINE
