'Income Comparator' that lets you know whether your income or assets are high or low worldwide

The Institute for World Inequality reported on December 7, 2021 that inequality

around the world is widening . When I read such a report, I am wondering, 'What is the position of my income and assets in the world?' Therefore, I tried to summarize how to find out where your income and assets belong in Japan and the world using 'Income Comparator ' also published by the Institute for World Inequality.

◆ How much position does your income belong to in Japan or the world?
When you access the Income Comparator, you will be presented with a screen where you can choose whether to check your income or your assets. First of all, I want to check the income, so click 'Income'.

Next, the country of residence selection screen will be displayed, so select 'Japan'.

A confirmation screen for currency units will be displayed. Confirm that it is 'Japanese yen' and click OK.

Next, the monthly income or annual income input screen will be displayed. This time, let's check the case where the monthly income is 150,000 yen, referring to

the report that the starting salary for high school graduates of national government employees is 150,600 yen. First, enter '150000' in the input field, then check 'per month' and click 'ENTER'.

This time, a screen to specify the number of adults in the household will be displayed, so this time specify one person and click 'ENTER' ...

The position of the monthly income of 150,000 yen in Japan is displayed. According to Income Comparator, if the monthly income is 150,000 yen, the income is higher than the bottom 40% of Japanese and the income is lower than the top 60%. In addition, the average monthly income of the top 50% of people is 176,948 yen. Click the arrow button in the red frame to check your income in more detail.

Then, you will be asked if you have a house, so select 'NO' this time.

Next, I was asked if I had any shares, so I chose 'NO' as well.

The following are the results derived based on the above conditions regarding home ownership and stocks. If the monthly income is 150,000 yen, it belongs to the position of 60% from the top in Japan, but since it belongs to the position of 28% from the top in the world, it can be said that the income is relatively large in the world. Click the arrow button on the right side of the screen to see the continuation of the result ...

The difference between my income and the top 1% in Japan & the world is displayed. With a monthly income of 150,000 yen, about 9.3% of the income earned by the top 1% of Japan is equivalent to about 14.9% of the income earned by the top 1% of the world.

The next screen shows how much your income group has grown in the 31 years from 1980 to 2021. In Japan, the top 60% of people earned 33% in 31 years, and in the world, the top 28% of people earned 49%.

◆ Check where your assets belong in Japan & the world
Then select Wealth on the first screen of the Income Comparator to see what assets you have.

Select 'Japan' on the country of residence selection screen ...

Select 'Japanese yen' as the currency.

Then, the input screen of total assets is displayed. This time, I entered '20 million yen', which became a

hot topic as a necessary reserve for old age in 2019, and clicked 'ENTER'.

All you have to do is specify the number of adults in your household. This time, I specified one person and clicked 'ENTER' to display the result.

According to Income Comparator, if the total assets are 20 million yen, it belongs to the top 26% of Japanese people. It seems that more than a quarter of the Japanese have assets of 20 million yen or more. Then click the arrow buttons at the bottom of the screen to see the details.

With total assets of 20 million yen, we are in the top 8% of the world.

The top 1% of Japanese have assets 8.2 times (about 164 million yen) of 20 million yen, and the top 1% of people in the world have assets of 47.1 times (about 892 million yen). I have it.
