From HTC's VR device brand 'VIVE', a stand-alone VR device ' VIVE Focus 3 ' appeared on June 30, 2021. I got the opportunity to experience this VIVE Focus 3 equipped with Qualcomm's SoC

Snapdragon XR2 , 8GB RAM, 5K resolution, viewing angle 120 degrees, frame rate standard 90Hz, so I actually installed it I enjoyed the world of virtual reality.

Box to hold VIVE Focus 3

When you open it, it looks like this inside.

VIVE Focus 3 main unit and 1 pair of controller.

The VIVE Focus 3 is standalone and works only with a headset without connecting to a PC.

The size including the headband part is actually measured, width maximum about 20 cm x depth maximum about 30 cm x height about 10 cm. The photo below is side by side with the Oculus Quest 2 (right) of the same standalone VR headset, and the glass part of the VIVE Focus 3 is slightly larger than the Oculus Quest 2.

A front view of the VIVE Focus 3. There are

inside-out cameras in the four corners. The center of the glass part is glossy and the surrounding scenery is reflected. Also, the VIVE logo is in the middle.

At the top center was an LED indicator and a cooling fan exhaust.

The bottom of VIVE Focus 3 looks like this.

There is a cover that can be fixed with a magnet in the center of the glass part, and there is one USB Type-C port in it. You can adjust the interpupillary distance (IPD) with the dial adjacent to the cover. The switch on the right of the image is a switch for adjusting the volume.

Inside the glass part

A silicone cover is attached to the nose, so light does not leak from around the nose when worn.

The face cover part is fixed with a magnet and can be easily removed with a light force.

When I removed the face cover, there was a microSD card slot on the far left. VIVE Focus 3 supports up to 2TB of microSD.

On the right side is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 USB Type-C input / output port and a 3.5mm audio terminal.

The left side looks like this.

Inside the left and right bands are embedded speakers.

The band part is movable up and down for easy wearing.

Headband part that holds the head down. You can adjust the length of the headband with the dial in the center. In addition, there is a port on the upper right to insert the AC adapter for charging.

Inside the headband is a cushion that is secured by a magnet. When I removed the cushion, it was in the battery compartment.

The battery looks like this. The headset battery lasts about 2 hours and can be charged up to 50% in 30 minutes with a quick charge.

The headset weighed 781g including the battery.

The left and right controllers look like this. The shape that the round sensor part comes inside the grip.

When you actually hold it, it looks like this.

The battery is not a dry battery replaceable type but a built-in rechargeable battery type, and the continuous use time is 15 hours. It has a USB Type-C port on the bottom and can be charged by connecting it from the headset with a USB Type-C cable.

The following is the side by side with the Touch controller (right) of Oculus Quest 2. The shape and thickness are similar, but the VIVE Focus 3 controller is longer.

Other contents include a cloth for wiping the lens, a bifurcated USB Type-C cable that can charge two controllers at the same time, a USB Type-A-USB Type-C cable that connects the headset to the PC, and a headset for charging. AC adapter.

The AC adapter has an input of 100 to 240V / 750mA and an output of 12V / 2.5A. The cable terminal is a DC plug.

Put on the headset. First, put the glass part on your face and then lower the headband.

Adjust the length of the upper band.

Turn the dial on the headband to secure the headset firmly.

I was able to install it like this. Since the glass part is a little large, you can wear it with your glasses on without any discomfort. Also, since it is mechanically tightened with a dial, it is fairly stable if it is firmly fixed. The front glass part is packed with the main base and parts, but since the battery is mounted on the back of the head, the weight of the front and back is balanced, and the headset is also characterized by being hard to slip off.

Press and hold the switch on the headband to turn on the headset.

At the same time, move the headset finely and operate the IPD adjustment dial to adjust so that there is no bleeding or blurring.

VIVE Focus 3 has a recommended play area of up to 10m x 10m and a minimum play area of 1.5m x 1.5m. The display shows the surrounding situation taken by the inside-out camera as a 'pass-through image', and the controller draws a line on the floor to determine the play area. Now you are ready.

When setting the boundaries of the play area, you can see what you see from VIVE Focus 3 in the following movie.

Now that the preparations are complete, I actually tried out various contents with VIVE Focus 3.

'Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass ' that I first touched is an application that allows you to enter the Louvre Museum reproduced in VR space and see Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece ' Mona Lisa'. It was developed in 2019 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci.

The feature of this app is that it reproduces the inside of the Louvre Museum. Outside the Louvre ...

The interior has been reproduced in detail, making it an app that makes you feel like you've been to the Louvre while you're at home. Especially by experiencing it on the 5K resolution display of VIVE Focus 3, you can get a high sense of reality.

And you can see the 'Mona Lisa', which is precisely reproduced by the latest infrared scan, as close as you can touch if you reach out.

The following movie shows how to watch 'Mona Lisa' while listening to the commentary narration in 'Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass'.

If you register for the official VIVE subscription service 'VIVE Port Infinity', you can play VR games as much as you want. This time, I played the VR boxing game 'Rhythm Boxing' that can be played on VIVE Port Infinity.

The rules are simple, punching in time with the trainer's instructions and music.

Of course, the punch is extended by sticking out the hand holding the controller. Punch is specified to the right and left, so it is a considerable amount of exercise.

In addition, the trainer may set up a punch toward us.

VIVE Focus 3 supports

6DoF that recognizes front and back, left and right, and up and down. You can actually avoid punching from the trainer by moving your body to avoid it. The VIVE Focus 3 has the headset firmly attached to your head, so it won't shift even if you move violently. Also, since the frame rate of VIVE Focus 3 is 90Hz as standard, the movement of the trainer and the quick punch are displayed smoothly, and it did not get jerky. In addition, since you play using your whole body, your physical strength will be reduced.

The following movie is where I actually played 'Rhythm Boxing'.

In addition, in the VR-only web browser ' Firefox Reality ', a curved tab window is displayed in the VR space, and you can browse the net as it is. You can check multiple sites at the same time in the VR space.

The 5K resolution of VIVE Focus 3 and the 120-degree field of view display provide beautiful images, and the visibility is high, and the sound played from the embedded speaker can be heard firmly, so I felt that the immersive feeling in the VR space was quite high. rice field. In addition, it supports 6DoF that recognizes front, back, left, right, up and down, and since it is a stand-alone type, you can move around freely without worrying about cables. In addition, it is a size that does not bother you even if you wear it with glasses on, and the headband part is made firmly, and it is firmly fixed after wearing it, so the big point is that the headset does not slip easily. In addition, each part is fixed with a magnet, and the face parts of the glass part and the cushion of the headband part can be easily removed, and I felt that it was easy to maintain.

With a stand-alone VR device, the question is 'whether VR content that requires high specifications can be displayed smoothly', but the operation does not become jerky or the sound and image do not shift. I was able to experience VR stress-free. I'm worried about the heat if I use it continuously, but since it has a cooling fan, the heat did not stay even after using it for more than an hour. The sound of the cooling fan was only audible when I listened to it, and I didn't notice it at all when the sound of the content was played.

The price of VIVE Focus 3 is 130,900 yen including tax. It can also be purchased at Amazon.co.jp.
