5 points to keep in mind to brand yourself and build your career

Success in a job depends not on 'working hard' but on 'making your expertise stand out'. For that purpose, how to brand yourself is important, so marketing consultant Dolly Clark has published 'Tips for branding yourself'.

◆ Stand out with a unique story

To be successful, you first need to be “more prominent” than others, Clark says. One of the ways to make this stand out is to create a powerful story that tells who you are. A good mix of factors such as background, experience, and skills developed will create a compelling story.

At this time, the point is to realize 'Where do you want to be in the story?'

Clark studied organizational psychology in graduate school and runs an organization development company at the time of writing the article. However, after graduating from university, Clark didn't know what he wanted to do, and the first job he got was an operations manager who put together the floor of the distribution center.

In the early stages of his career, Clark considered the work of a distribution center as a 'derivative of his career' and left it out of the story, but over time it made a big difference to people with similar backgrounds. I noticed that the point is the technology acquired at the distribution center. Having an operational management post at a distribution center helped advise corporate executives.

Clark says that the derivative of a person's feeling that he/she doesn't want to be in the story makes the person's career stand out.

◆ To be recognized as an expert

A unique story describes 'who you are', but showing 'who you are' does not directly show 'what you are'.

The ideal of the field recognized as an expert is where 'what I am good at', 'what I enjoy' and 'what people want' overlap.

While Clark was consulting for a company, he realized that one of the engineer team leaders was particularly often called by other employees. Talking to this person, Clark learned that he was managing customers before he became an engineer. Not only the skill as an engineer, but being devoted to 'talking to a person who is not an engineer technically' increased the importance of this person. One of his strengths was that he could speak to the engineers in the “language” that the engineers could understand, and to speak to the sales and finance people in the “language” of those people.

He knew his specialty was 'cooperative problem-solving,' and he had a career built on that ability.

◆ Regaining creativity

Although Clark is a creative artist when he was a kid, he thinks that he loses creativity by learning the 'value of the right answer' and 'safe betting' in his life.

But if you are in the ongoing 'story' and are trying to write the next chapter, creativity is essential. Clark recommends that you throw out a lot of ideas, do new projects with people, do voicemail instead of email, and carry out 'new ideas' everywhere.

Even a small amount of creativity can make a person stand out and leave an impression on others. Clark says that half of what is important in building your own career is 'to be remembered by people,' and if you remember it, it will become a topic and increase your chances of working.

◆ Enter an aggressive stance

'You can't win just by waiting for others to score points,' Clark said. Of course, this does not mean throwing everything away and taking risks. It's scary that anyone is at risk of losing a stable job. However, you can take action to move forward without abandoning your full-time job. It's important to think about ways to move the ball forward as well as defend the goal.

One of the best ways to do this is to earn extra income from your side business, or learn something new on the weekends to build confidence in your next career change. Rather than overcoming fear, it is important not to be caught in fear but to always be in an aggressive stance.

◆ Be bold and weak

Regardless of your strategy, there are situations in which you can use the help of other people or make connections. For this reason, it is important to be bold to show yourself where people are. On the other hand, when you're out in the crowds, you need to show your weaknesses and the need for help so that they can help you and reach you. Said.
