◆ Basic specifications
Designed for 7nm manufacturing processes, the TR 3960X and TR 3970X are built with four Zen 2 architecture chiplets paired with a single I / O die, each with 6 cores or It has 8 cores. Both the TR 3970X and TR 3960X are built on the new sTRX4 socket, with a total of 64 lanes of PCie 4.0 interface and support for 4 DDR4-3200 memory channels. The tax-excluded price is 164,800 yen for TR 3960X and 233,800 yen for TR 3970X.

The table below compares the specifications of the 3rd generation Threadripper, 2nd generation Threadripper, and Ryzen 9 3950X. The TR 3960X and TR 3970X have a TDP (thermal design power) of 280W, which is higher than the TDP250W of the second generation Threadripper. Anand Tech says that a significant amount of heat is expected, so a solid cooling is required regardless of the system.

Below is a table comparing specs with Intel's HEDT CPU

Core i9-10980XE, which will be released almost simultaneously. Core i9-10980XE has lower specifications such as the number of core threads, L3 cache, DRAM capacity compared to TR 3960X and TR 3970X, but TDP is low at 165 W, the price overseas is $ 979 (about 106,700 yen ) And it is cheaper. The domestic price of Core i9-10980XE is around 138,000 yen including tax .

Anand Tech performed benchmark measurements with the following configuration:

◆ Power consumption per core
The table below shows the results of Anand Tech testing the TR 3960X power metrics using affinity masks. Of the 24 cores, the power consumption peaked at 280W when using 21 cores, and it can be seen that the power consumption decreases slightly as the number of cores increases. However, even in the case of 21 cores, Anand Tech states that the power used by the core is about 205W, and the remaining 75W is used for memory controllers and PCIe route control.

And the test result with TR 3970X is below. With TR 3970X, it reaches 286W with 23 cores, and even if the number of cores increases further, the power consumption will be flat.

Below is a graph comparing peak power consumption with various CPUs. In addition, Intel Xeon W-3175X of 28 core 56 thread CPU for Intel server which is TDP255W jumps to 381.08W and has recorded high peak power consumption.

◆ Rendering test
Anand Tech said, “CG rendering is often an important target for processor workloads and is a good way to check professional environments,” although using GPUs,

FPGAs , and ASICs , He said the CPU is still important hardware for major movie companies. And the rendering performance is compared with multiple benchmark software.

Corona 1.3 . The higher the number, the better the score.

Blender 2.79b: 3D Creation Suite . The smaller the number, the better the score.

LuxMark v3.1: LuxRender via Different Code Paths . The higher the number, the better the score.

POV-Ray 3.7.1: Ray Tracing . The higher the number, the better the score.

The 3rd generation Threadripper, TR 3970X, has the highest score in rendering performance in all benchmark software. Also, Anand Tech pointed out that Core i9-10980XE, released at the same time, had outperformed the second generation Threadripeer.

◆ System test
Tests include application load time, image processing, scientific physics calculations, emulation, and neural simulation.

The graph below compares the time taken to load a 50MB design template 10 times at 10 second intervals with

GIMP 2.10.4 . The smaller the number, the better the score. The TR 3960X has a better score than the TR 3970X, but the Ryzen 9 3950X has a much higher score.

In 3D

Particle Movement v2.1 , which simulates a particle movement algorithm in 3D space, the score with the streaming SIMD extension command disabled is as follows. The higher the number, the better the score. This was the victory of the TR 3970X, with Ryzen Threadripper occupying the top 4 models.

When the streaming SIMD extension instruction is enabled, the result is as follows. According to Anand Tech, the streaming SIMD extension instruction has an advantage over Intel's CPU, so Intel CPU occupies the top.

The graph below shows the measurement accuracy of

Dolphin v5.0 , which can be used to emulate Gamecube and Wii. The smaller the number, the better the score. The TR 3960X has a top class performance alongside the Core i9-9900K.

Below is a real-time simulation score for

DigiCortex 1.20, which simulates neuron and synapse activity. The larger the number, the better the score, and the larger the number, the better the real-time simulation is possible. TR 3970X has scored better than Intel Xeon W-3175X. On the other hand, TR 3960X seems to have lost to 2990WX of 2nd generation Threadripper.

◆ Encoding test
Using

HandBrake , an open source tool, Anand Tech uses 1080p / 60fps video shot with Logitec's webcam C920 , `` 720p / 60fps at a fixed bit rate of 6000kbps '', `` 1080p / 60fps at a fixed bit rate of 3500kbps '' Encoding is performed with three settings of '1080p / 60fps ( H.265 ) at a variable bit rate of 3500kbps', and comparison is made for each 'number of frames written per second'.

The result of encoding to 720p / 60fps at a fixed bit rate of 6000kbps is as follows. The higher the number, the better the score. TR 3970X recorded the 2nd place score, but Ryzen 9 3950X of TDP105W with one core and 32 threads has a higher score.

The result of encoding to 1080p / 60fps at a fixed bit rate of 3500kbps is as follows. The higher the number, the better the score. Although it was pulled out to Core i9-7960X, TR 3970X still keeps the top.

The result of encoding to 1080p / 60fps (H.265) at a variable bit rate of 3500kbps is as follows. The higher the number, the better the score. As a result, Intel Core i9 ranked in the top and TR 3970X fell a little. “In any case, Ryzen 9 3950X seems to be a better choice than 3rd generation Threadripper for video encoding purposes,” Anand Tech evaluates.

Benchmarking is built into

7-Zip , an open source compression and decompression tool. The result of the file compression test with 7-Zip v1805 is as follows. The larger the number, the better the score. The 3rd generation Threadripper is the best in the world.

In the file decompression test, TR 3970X and TR 3960X remain unchanged, and the 2nd generation Threadripper shows up.

Even in the result of file integration test, TR 3970X and TR 3960X were overwhelming. “The 3rd generation Threadripper seems to have better parallel processing than the 2nd generation Threadripper and Intel CPUs,” Anand Tech said.

Anand Tech is also testing

WinRAR v5.60b3, a well-established compression / decompression software, to compress more than 30 60-second video files and 2000 small files at a normal compression rate. The time taken for compression was measured, and the score was calculated by averaging the last 5 tests of 10 tests. The result is the following graph. Except for the second-generation Threadripper, which exceeds 50 seconds, almost all of the TR 3970X and TR 3960X are subordinate to each other, although they are almost side by side, around 45 seconds. About this cause, Anand Tech predicts that 'the CPU frequency and the number of cores seem to be the limiting factors.'

And the following is a comparison of the speed of

AES encryption processing using Windows standard commands. The higher the number, the better the score.

◆ Comprehensive comparison test

GeekBench 4 is a benchmark software often used for cross-platform testing between smartphones, PCs and Macs. The tests by Geekbench 4 include encryption, compression, fast Fourier transform, memory operation, matrix operation, histogram operation, HTML analysis, and comprehensive evaluation is possible, but Anand Tech says, “Geekbench The benchmark is so popular that we ran it, but Geekbench's score is too much (of the various tests). '

The results of comparing single thread performance with Geekbench 4 are as follows. The higher the number, the better the score.

The result of comparing multithread performance with Geekbench 4 is as follows. The higher the number, the better the score.

◆ Gaming performance comparison
Anand Tech measures the average number of frames per second for multiple PC games under various image quality settings. The higher the number, the better the score. Although gaming performance is almost the same, Intel CPU outperforms third-generation Threadripper in most tests, albeit with slight differences. Also, the 2nd generation Threadripper and Ryzen 9 3950X were often producing better results.
