Shimanami Kaito's starting point · A cyclist's wish guesthouse in Imabari-shi "House of the Cyclone"



The Shimanami Kaido which can run a bicycle from Honshu to Shikoku boasts tremendous popularity as a sacred place for cyclists. A cycling route that crosses the islands floating in the Seto Inland Sea with a number of bridges. Many cyclists dream that "I want to run once". There was a guest house for witness cyclists in Imogenichi City - the origin of Shimoku side of such Shimanami Kaido.

Hello,Takuya SAITO who did a round around the world by bicycle @ Charridermanis. Now that I have finished my trip, my next dream is to make a guest house someday. Imabari-shi's "Cycl's House" was a place that shaped my dream.

◆ What is Shimanami Kaido?
There are only 3 means to move from Honshu to Shikoku by land route from the east to the Kobe · Naruto Route, Kojima · Sakaide Route (Seto Ohashi Bridge), Onomichi · Imabari Route (Setonai Shimanami Kaido). Since others are car exclusive roads, it is only Shimanami Hajime which connects Honshu and Shikoku with human force by Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari City in Ehime prefecture.


In 2002, I also ran a Shimanami Kaido on a bike round Japan. Adventure of a total length of about 70 km that crosses the sea by bicycle from the bridge to the bridge. It was like a dream like excitement.

◆ Cyclone House
If there is a cyclist in imabari-shi, such as Shikoku side starting point of such Shimanamichi road, there is a guest house called "Cycl's House" which I would like to visit once.

Last summer I did not have a bicycle but stayed overnight.

It is a perfect location with a 1-minute walk from JR Imabari Station. It was a distance that did not bother me even if I got off at the station and looked for a guesthouse while carrying a circle bag. Because it is too close, it goes back and passes.


The building with the appearance of a white large house is a guest house.


◆ Reception
I was surprised to open the door. I imagined a place full of living feeling, but a sophisticated space like a designer's apartment was spreading. The walls in the guest house are based on white, so the nature and atmosphere will also be bright. In such space, abundant wood used to create a comfortable warmth. I am convinced by the staff to listen to the concept of "a guest house where even one woman can stay". I can not negotiate design for women to choose.

There was a large semicircle desk on the right side of the entrance. It is a place of recreation where guests gather and the flower blooms in the story of the trip.


Meeting various people in these places is the real pleasure of traveling.


Under the counter there are merchandise items such as original goods for cyclists. I heard there are goods available only here. In Imabari-shi, we also put special towels.


The reception desk also serves as a counter for the cafe & amp; bar so that you can order drinks and alcohol as well.

◆ Information space
The room on the left of the reception desk is also a shared space. Even at this desk, a lot of talks were raised among travelers.


There is also a kitchen so you can cook yourself. There was also a set of cooking utensils.


Electric stove


On the shelf are a rice cooker, a toaster, an electric kettle, a microwave oven and a cooker appliances under the stove. We also have plenty of dishes, cups and chopsticks.


When staying in a dormitory it is convenient to have a valuables locker. You can store laptop computers and cameras.


There was a lot of bicycle magazines, travel books, information magazines, etc. on the bookshelf called "cyclolibrary". There is also power in the Chari travel book, and it feels like I have all the books I have. The form I wanted to do was in the form.

Guest notes and information notes are worth reading as well. There was also a guide covering shop of Imabari-shi B Grade Gourmet "Baked Pork Tamagusu".


◆ bedtime space
The sleeping space was the second floor which went up the stairs.


Dormitory for men and women was a quadruple room. Since curtains are attached to each bed, private parties can also secure a certain degree even in the shared room.


This is my bed. It was the lower stage of the bunk bed, but I felt cramped because there was a height. In this world there was also a bunk bed with a narrow gap between the upper and lower spaces ... .... Reading lights and outlets are provided in each bed. It is comfortable because there is no power competition fight if there is one power supply for each person. There was a flashlight at your feet. After turning off it was to use other people so as not to wake up others.


There are beds like a capsule hotel. People from overseas seem to be pleased.

It will be either. It is not that big guest house so far. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Common toilets and shower were installed at 3 places each.

The sink was also shiny. There is also a hairdryer.


There are two washbasins so it is saved. Even if someone is using it, you can use it without waiting if the other one is free.


◆ Bicycle parking space
What is most appreciated by cyclists was that there was a safe bicycle parking space. You do not need to worry about theft or rain.


When the cyclists gather, a lot of nice bicycles line up.



I also seemed to be able to do maintenance of my car as I also had all the bicycle tools.


When I was traveling by bicycle, the monkey wrench that turns the sprocket removal tool and the punching tool with the chain chains attached became heavy, so it was not carried around. There is no choice but to find a bicycle store if a problem arises. So, I dreamed of making a guesthouse like Cycl's home with all kinds of tools. My ideal was shaped here as well.

Even if the hand gets dirty by maintenance of the bicycle, there is also a dedicated sink, so it is safe.


There was laundry at the end of this parking space. The washing machine was with detergent once from 200 yen, dryer 15 minutes from 100 yen.


Kazunari Utsunomiya
I was involved in the operation of this guesthouse was Kazunari Utsunomiya who achieved a round of the world with a tandem bicycle. A senior who was traveling from 1997 to 2007. It is a legendary charrider. Participated in the regional NPO through "Cyclotourism (bicycle trip)" in Imabari City, where he was born as Ehime prefecture. "Cycl's House" was also one of its NPO activities. I did not have an acquaintance, but I knew about activities so I decided to stay for the night also as a future study.

It was his work that was decorated in the Cycle Libraries.


Since travel professionals are joining the management, the guest house is comfortable as well. Is it said that the hand reaches the itchy place, detailed ideas of the traveler's point of view were exploding everywhere. Also, there are interchange spaces so travelers meet each other. I also got a conversation. It was not just a night stay, it was a place full of pleasure of traveling.

◆ Afterword
It is a house of Cyclos, but a lot of cyclists are really used.
