Coates, a former intellectual property lawyer for Twitter, has launched a company called Operation Bluebird and is exploring the possibility of starting a social networking service under the name Twitter. To that end, he has filed a petition with the Patent and Trademark Office seeking the cancellation of the trademarks for 'Twitter' and 'Tweet.' Coates argues that after Elon Musk acquired Twitter and renamed it X , X abandoned the trademarks for 'Twitter' and 'Tweet.'

Coates has already launched a website called Twitter.new, but X does not approve of this and has sued him for trademark infringement, claiming that he is misusing the Twitter brand. However, in a hearing in April 2026, District Court Judge Colm Connolly issued a preliminary ruling stating that 'X appears to have abandoned its intellectual property claims to the word Tweet, the Twitter bird logo, and possibly the word Twitter,' and although a formal written order has not been issued, this could potentially move in Coates' favor.
On August 27, 2026, Coates announced the launch of 'Twitter.now,' a new social networking service aiming to create a public forum organized around trust, transparency, and user choice, and began recruiting founding members.
Becoming a founding member requires a $20 (approximately 3200 yen) fee. Founding members receive early access to Twitter.now's social networking features, a numbered badge, and a username of their choice. There is also a 'Fighter' status available for a payment of $40 (approximately 6400 yen) or more, which grants all the benefits of a founding member plus a badge of a bird holding a slingshot. Twitter.now has set a fight against X as one of its goals, and paying the participation fee is explained as funding that fight.
According to reports, Twitter.now only has a few hundred users at the time of writing. It has a look and feel very similar to the old Twitter, and it apparently has reply and retweet functions.
One of the uniquely added features is 'Vera,' an automated fact-checking tool. This tool is based on Gemini and automatically checks the reliability of posted information.
Twitter.now announced, 'This service is built as a trusted, open dialogue for community, creators, and real-time news. We are committed to protecting freedom of expression while maintaining the safety of the platform. We prohibit illegal content, child exploitation, violence, harassment, fraud, and other harmful activities. As the platform grows, our policies and features will continue to evolve.'
