Reddit is testing a video that reads posts and comments aloud using AI voice.

At its Q2 2026 earnings call, the message board-style social news site Reddit announced it was working on a 'new video Reddit experience' that would allow users to view posts converted into videos and podcasts using AI. This feature began testing on August 17th on web browsers, and on August 18th on iOS and Android.

At the Q2 earnings call in July 2026, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told analysts that 'people are already watching Reddit video and audio content on other platforms.' Indeed, on TikTok, there are numerous videos posted that simply read Reddit topics over unrelated backgrounds.

Turning Reddit into video and audio is expected to allow people to listen to Reddit posts in the background while doing other tasks or activities. CEO Huffman said, 'Other places on the internet, we're seeing a new type of content emerge: podcasts, which are basically people reading Reddit content. I think this listening or talking version of Reddit could also be very appealing.'

And indeed, Reddit's voice-over feature began testing on August 17, 2026. Initially, it was only available on web browsers, but on the 18th, it was expanded to iOS and Android, although it is limited to English posts within certain designated subreddits. When the feature is available, users will be able to choose to 'read' or 'play' the posts.

The following is an 8-year-old post from the board game subreddit 'r/boardgames'. There is a 'Read/Play' toggle switch at the top of the post. Click 'Play'.

The video started playing, and the posts and comments began to be read aloud. Below the video, it says, 'An AI is reading aloud an actual conversation.'

Reddit told the media, 'In this experiment, we're using AI to create new audio and video formats that replicate real human conversations, including multi-voice text-to-speech, subtitles, and visual templates. The initial tests are limited, early-stage experiments to get a deeper understanding of how useful these formats are to users and whether we can implement them in a way that's uniquely Reddit.'
