TikTok is testing the ability to upload longer videos up to 60 minutes long

The feature was discovered by social media consultant Matt Navarra and reported to Threads.

TikTok originally started as a service for uploading and sharing 15-second videos, but has gradually been increasing the length of videos that can be uploaded in order to compete with YouTube, the world's largest video sharing platform.

At the time of writing, users could upload videos up to 10 minutes long, and some creators have been able to upload videos up to 30 minutes long since January 2024. In addition, users who sell content on a subscription plan can upload videos up to 20 minutes long.

'We're increasing video length limits to give creators more flexibility and the opportunity to experiment with new and larger content,' ByteDance, which operates TikTok, told TechCrunch.

TechCrunch points out that by expanding the video playback time limit to 60 minutes, it will be possible to upload an entire episode of a TV drama. In fact, there have been cases in which rights holders have officially uploaded the first episode of a drama to TikTok, but they split the episode into five parts and uploaded it. If it becomes possible to upload videos up to 60 minutes long, it will be possible to upload an entire episode of a drama to TikTok without splitting it.

According to TechCrunch, TikTok will introduce a feature that allows users to fast forward by long pressing on the right side of a video in 2023, and is also testing features such as the ability to share videos with a wide aspect ratio and the ability to display the content of the video in the thumbnail. These features have already been introduced on YouTube, and TikTok's stance as a video sharing platform to compete with YouTube can be seen.

At the time of writing, it is unclear when TikTok will officially offer the ability to upload videos up to 60 minutes long.
