When Tesla launched the lower-priced Cybertruck model, it introduced the 'FSD Migration Program,' which allowed owners who had already purchased FSD to transfer the functionality from their current vehicle to a newly ordered Tesla. This program was welcomed by owners because installing FSD from scratch is costly.
However, on February 28, 2026, the eligibility requirements for this program were suddenly changed .
The initial requirement was to 'order a new Tesla vehicle by March 31, 2026.'
However, the new requirement is that the vehicle must be delivered by March 31, 2026, meaning that even if you ordered in advance, you will not be eligible for the FSD transition program if delivery is delayed.
This change has caused dissatisfaction among users who interpreted it as meaning they only needed to place an order by March 31, 2026. Tesla has responded by refunding order fees to users who are no longer eligible, but many users feel this is not sufficient.
In June 2026, the program saw a new development, offering ineligible users a new option. However, this option—to reorder a higher-grade Cybertruck costing at least $20,000 (approximately 3.2 million yen) more—has sparked further backlash.
The cheapest Cybertruck model costs $59,990 (approximately 9.7 million yen), while the higher-end models start at a minimum of $79,990 (approximately 12.8 million yen). Users are dissatisfied, saying that if they can't upgrade to FSD without paying this difference, there was no reason to buy a lower-grade model in the first place. Furthermore, there is a monthly fee of $99 (approximately 16,000 yen) for new FSD installations. A one-time purchase option was previously available but was discontinued in February 2026.
The lower-priced models of the Cybertruck have been plagued by delivery delays since their launch, with delivery scheduled for June 2026 immediately after release. However, just under a week after launch, delivery dates have been pushed back to 2027.
Tesla states that the FSD transition program is available to 'customers whose original delivery date was before March 31, 2026, including those whose delivery was delayed to April due to Tesla's delays.' However, some users who thought they would be eligible simply by placing an order have complained that it seems like a 'bait-and-switch' scheme. It has also been pointed out that Tesla had provided an escape route from the beginning by stating that customers 'may become eligible for the FSD transition.'
