CrossOver, a Windows compatibility layer developed by CodeWeavers , is based on Wine , another open-source Windows compatibility layer. It's a valuable tool for some, enabling users to play Windows games on their Macs.
The latest version, CrossOver 27, includes several compromises to streamline development, resulting in support only for Macs running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Furthermore, CodeWeavers has announced that CrossOver 27 will only support Macs with Apple Silicon. This means that Macs with Intel CPUs will no longer be able to use CrossOver 27.

Furthermore, Apple also ended support for Macs with Intel CPUs with macOS 27 Golden Gate , the latest version of macOS announced at WWDC26 .

By ending support for Macs with Intel CPUs, CodeWeavers will no longer need to spend time maintaining Intel-based Macs, allowing them to focus on UI and optimization for specific computer clusters.
Furthermore, 32-bit bottles will no longer work at all starting with CrossOver 27. Since 64-bit bottles are compatible with almost all 32-bit applications, migrating to 64-bit bottles is strongly recommended.
CodeWeavers anticipates that the impact of this update will be minimal, as 97% of CrossOver users are using macOS Sonoma or later.
AppleInsider, an Apple-related media outlet, reports: 'If you're using an Intel-based Mac or an older version of macOS, you can rest assured that CrossOver 26 won't suddenly crash. It should continue to work as is unless you purchase a new version or attempt an upgrade. However, be aware that if you continue to use CrossOver 26, you may encounter compatibility issues when the game is updated. Also, be aware that newer operating systems may have compatibility issues with older software. Ultimately, you may have no choice but to migrate to Apple Silicon.'
