Ona is a software company that started with the belief that 'software development shouldn't be tied to a single laptop,' and for many years has helped people migrate their software development from local machines to the cloud. Already, 2 million developers are using their technology. The growth in users has been particularly remarkable since January 2026, with weekly users from demanding institutions such as banks and sovereign wealth funds increasing 13-fold.
OpenAI stated, 'As the capabilities of Codex improve, the most valuable work is now done over hours or even days, not minutes. We believe people should no longer be tied to the machine they started working on. Work should continue after the initial session ends, and they should be able to stay connected, check progress, make decisions, and review results from anywhere,' adding that Ona is what makes this possible.
According to OpenAI, as of June 11, 2026, more than 5 million people use Codex weekly, representing a 400% increase since the beginning of 2026. OpenAI stated, 'By welcoming Ona to OpenAI, we are extending Codex beyond being tied to a single device or active session, helping more organizations securely deploy agents in production environments.'
Both companies will continue to operate independently until the acquisition is approved by regulatory authorities. After the acquisition is complete, Ona will join OpenAI's Codex team and continue its work.
