OpenAI raises $40 billion despite negative profit margins

On March 31, 2025, OpenAI announced that it had raised an additional $40 billion (approximately 6 trillion yen) and its valuation had reached $300 billion (approximately 45 trillion yen). On the other hand, some analysts have said that 'OpenAI's 2024 performance will result in negative profits.'

'Our $400 million in new funding will enable us to further push the frontiers of AI research, expand our computational infrastructure, and deliver increasingly powerful tools to the 500 million people who use ChatGPT every week,' OpenAI said in a statement.
He also mentioned the partnership with SoftBank Group, saying, 'Few companies understand how to scale transformative technologies like SoftBank Group. Their support will help us continue to build AI systems that accelerate scientific discovery, enable personalized education, enhance human creativity, and pave the way to AGI (artificial general intelligence) for the benefit of all humanity.'
In January 2025, OpenAI and SoftBank Group, in cooperation with Oracle and MGX, launched the 'Stargate' project to invest $500 billion (about 75 trillion yen) over the next four years to build a new AI infrastructure in the United States.

OpenAI's sales are also doing well, and according to a source interviewed by Bloomberg , OpenAI's sales are expected to be $12.7 billion (approximately 1.9 trillion yen) in 2025, more than three times the previous year. This momentum is expected to continue the following year, reaching $29.4 billion (approximately 4.4 trillion yen) in 2026.
Meanwhile, a September 2024 New York Times report said OpenAI would lose $5 billion in 2024. With projected annual revenue of $3.7 billion, that means the company would be in the red at least through 2024. Sources said the company does not expect to be cash-flow positive until 2029, when projected revenue is expected to exceed $125 billion.
In addition, OpenAI launched a paid plan called ' ChatGPT Pro ' in December 2024, which cost $200 (about 30,000 yen) per month, but despite the high fee, it was flooded with users, resulting in losses.

Sherwood said, 'The operating costs of the ChatGPT service are likely to skyrocket as all models will be inference models in the future. Inference models require expensive computational time to think through a problem, which appears to improve model performance. However, it is unclear whether the current product price can cover these huge costs.'
