Kentucky Fried Chicken and other companies are adopting Alibaba's AI 'Qwen' to fully automate all orders via chat.

Alibaba Group, which provides the AI model 'Qwen,' has announced a policy to open up its AI agent functionality to third parties. This will allow users to interact with customized AI agents provided by companies such as Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and

Luckin Coffee via the Qwen app and place orders and make other requests.

Companies joining the first phase of the partnership include KFC, Luckin Coffee, the restaurant chain MIXUE, and China Eastern Airlines. KFC will provide its smart assistant, allowing users to order, pay, and pick up at over 13,000 stores across China using the Qwen app. For example, if a user types 'Order a chicken burger to go from my nearest KFC' into Qwen, the AI agent will find the nearest store, automatically apply discount coupons, and calculate the pickup time.

According to Alibaba, these companies can customize agents to provide services on Qwen through natural conversation, and can also proactively send reminders and recommendations to users before they make a request.

For example, China Eastern Airlines can suggest optimized itineraries based on users' travel plans and preferences, and Luckin Coffee can advise users to pre-order to avoid peak hours.

Alibaba stated, 'The Qwen app is currently supported by dozens of integrated agents and achieves over 100 million daily uses in lifestyle services. Our goal is to share these capabilities—understanding user intent, accurate matching, and proactive planning—with corporate partners across all industries. By opening up our ecosystem, Qwen aims to provide all users with a truly versatile AI personal assistant.'

Alibaba anticipates that in the future, consumers will primarily access online services through AI agents rather than traditional apps. They have already integrated agent-based AI into their flagship marketplace, Taobao, allowing users to shop via the Qwen app. It is reported that 140 million users already utilize AI-powered shopping services.

Furthermore, Alibaba's rival Tencent is also planning to deploy agents within its messaging app WeChat, which is expected to allow users to seamlessly perform multi-step tasks, from ordering taxis to booking airline tickets, via WeChat.
