Globalstar is a leading provider of satellite mobile communications services (MSS), offering wireless communication services via artificial satellites. It is a pioneer in non-geostationary orbit satellites (NGSO) and D2D technology, which directly connects satellites to mobile devices.
By acquiring Globalstar, Amazon can add D2D services to its satellite communications service, Amazon Leo , and extend its coverage to customers outside the range of its terrestrial network.
Globalstar is also used in Apple's emergency call service, but Amazon and Apple have now signed an agreement to enable iPhones and Apple Watches to use Amazon Leo's satellite communication service, so the impact of this acquisition on Apple users is likely to be minimal.
Paul Jacobs, CEO of Globalstar, said, 'We have long believed that low Earth orbit satellites are the most effective way to truly connect users and devices anytime, anywhere. For over 30 years, we have strived to realize this vision through technological innovation, operational excellence, and sustained investment in developing a spectrum that integrates satellites and the ground on a global scale. The combination of Globalstar and Amazon Leo will accelerate digital connectivity innovation, benefit our customers, and move us forward towards a smarter, always-connected world.'
Amazon and Globalstar have agreed to a final merger agreement, and shareholders who hold approximately 58% of Globalstar's total voting rights have also approved the agreement. The acquisition is expected to be completed in 2027, subject to regulatory approval and Globalstar achieving milestones for its 'HIBLEO-4' project's replacement satellite.
