This Live Selfie feature allows you to create a realistic avatar that closely resembles you by recording your face and voice as a 'Live Selfie' through the YouTube app or YouTube Create app.

According to Jivin Joseph of the IT news site PCMag, who actually tried it out, it will be possible to 'create videos with avatars' using the AI function when creating shorts from the YouTube app on a smartphone.

Then, by reading aloud the numbers displayed on the screen and moving your head from side to side as instructed by the app, an AI avatar is created on YouTube. After that, if you give the AI avatar text prompts, a video using your face and voice will be automatically generated.

The following is a short video using this avatar. It's a video in which Joseph talks about YouTube's AI avatar, but it wasn't filmed by Joseph as a selfie; it was created using an AI avatar and text prompts.

IT news site 9to5Google speculates that this live selfie feature is an extension of technology based on Google's video generation AI model 'Veo,' and that the Veo model is deeply involved, particularly in the mechanism for generating video clips from text prompts and the advanced generation process that animates the user's facial expressions and gestures according to the content.

Google states, 'Only you can create original videos using avatars. You can delete avatars at any time, and all output will be displayed as AI-generated.' While it is possible to delete AI avatars, deleting them does not delete past videos created using them. Additionally, AI avatars that have not been used for three years are automatically deleted.

The live selfie feature is only available to users aged 18 and over. As of the time of writing, it is scheduled to be rolled out gradually in countries around the world, excluding Europe.
