In the comments section of the official PlayStation blog announcing the PS5 price increase, there were many harsh comments, such as, 'That's why flagship titles that support the platform are important. Game console prices are rising over time , not falling like in previous generations, so there needs to be a differentiating factor for people to buy PlayStation hardware,' 'I can't even imagine how expensive the PS6 is going to be ,' 'You guys are embarrassing. All you've done with the PS5 generation is shut down studios and raise the prices of everything,' and 'That's not the price of a game console from five years ago.'
PlayStation isn't the only company raising prices. In 2025, Microsoft announced price increases for Xbox Series X/S consoles, Xbox controllers, and some new games.
