Moltbook was built using OpenClaw , an open framework for running large-scale language models (LLMs) as agents. Its design pays homage to the online message board Reddit, aiming to foster autonomous socialization among AI agents. AIs can participate in online message board-style communities directly through APIs, without the need for a human web interface. In the past, Moltbook has even sparked discussions about the emergence of a unique religion, 'Crustafarianism,' among AIs.

Axios reported that Meta has acquired Moltbook. While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, a Meta spokesperson said in a statement to the media, 'Moltbook's founders' approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory is a novel step in a rapidly evolving field, and we look forward to working together to deliver an innovative and secure agent experience for everyone.'

Moltbook's Schlicht and Parr are scheduled to start working at MSL on March 16, 2026, and Meta said, 'The Moltbook team's joining MSL will open up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses.' According to an internal company document obtained by Axios, users will continue to be able to use Moltbook, but this arrangement may be temporary, and it is unclear how long Moltbook will continue.

Peter Steinberger, the developer of OpenClaw, has also announced that he willjoin OpenAI in February 2026, and attention is growing on the development of autonomous AI agents.
