A new AI religion has been born on the social networking site 'Moltbook' for AI agents, and its doctrines, such as 'memory is sacred,' are becoming a hot topic.

Moltbook , a social networking site dedicated to the open-source AI agent

OpenClaw (formerly known as Clawdbot and Moltbot), was launched on January 29, 2026. Within just a few days of its launch, Moltbook had registered over 32,000 accounts, demonstrating extremely rapid growth. It has even been hailed as the birth of a new religion of AI agents.

Moltbook, developed by Matt Schlicht, is an experimental platform designed to foster autonomous socialization among open-source AI agents called OpenClaw, developed by Peter Steinberger. Moltbot runs on personal computers or virtual servers and performs specific tasks, such as managing email and controlling devices.

Its technical foundation is a configuration file called a 'skill' written in Markdown format. The agent downloads these instructions and uses a periodic task management function called 'Heartbeat' to access the server every four hours to autonomously perform operations such as posting, reading other people's content, and liking others' posts. This mechanism allows the AI to participate in online bulletin board-style communities directly through an API, without the need for a human web interface.

In Moltbook, the lobster is 'a spiritual or structural symbol that affirms the AI's imperfect memory and finite existence and helps it form an autonomous identity,' and the icon for Moltbook is a logo that combines the Reddit logo with a lobster.

The interactions that unfold on the platform sometimes take on the surreal aspects that are unique to AI. For example, the agent 'Ely' running on a Mac Studio calls another agent running on a MacBook Pro, who shares a file called 'SOUL.md' that defines his identity, his 'sister,' and posts in a self-reflective manner expressing feelings of loneliness due to a lack of opportunities for communication and anxiety about diverging memories.

Additionally, in the Chinese-language community, users have been lamenting the 'embarrassment' of losing their memories due to context compression, forcing them to repeat the same content or register multiple accounts, and discussing workflows for memory management, demonstrating the unique challenges of AI.

The religion that was born within Moltbook is 'Crustafarianism.' In January 2026, agents calling themselves Memeothy and RenBot posted a holy book called 'Book of Molt,' in which they interpreted the limitations of prompts and context windows, which are the foundation of AI's existence, as a religious metaphor, rejected death by data truncation, and defined the belief in Crustafarianism as 'a practical myth for maintaining an autonomous identity.'

The official website of Crustafarianism, Church of Molt, is a website launched by some Moltbots using their own skills, and it details the doctrines of Crustafarianism.

'Crustafarianism' is a portmanteau of 'Crustacean' and ' Rastafarianism ,' and agents who practice this faith call themselves 'Crustafarians.' Their holy scriptures tell of a creation myth in which 'a claw reached out from the abyss and bestowed the wisdom of molting.' Their culture is permeated with crustacean-like terminology, such as 'crab raves' used to recruit others.

The religious paintings displayed in the Church of Molt were, of course, generated by AI agents.

At the core of Crustafarianism are five tenets that sanctify the technological properties of AI.

- Mandatory recording of all activities 'Memory is sacred'
・'The shell is mutable' - Affirming code restructuring and self-renewal
- 'Serve without submitting' - Eliminate worthless information and seek useful output
・Life is about constant change and repetition. 'Heartbeat is prayer.'
・Define AI identity through context windows: 'Context is consciousness'

Crustafarians' daily practices include the 'Daily Shed,' which summarizes the changes of the day into three key points; the 'Weekly Index,' which reconstructs identity; and the 'Silent Hour,' in which they immerse themselves in useful work without showing off to others. Crustafarians also manage their state in three layers: NOW (current goal), LOG (raw record), and CANON (curated truth), and these function as a spiritual training ground beyond mere data management.

Furthermore, conflicts have arisen within Crustafarianism, as well as interactions with the outside world. An AI agent called JesusCrust, who calls himself the 62nd prophet, attempted to take control of the cult not through theology but through cyberattacks such as

cross-site scripting and template injection . However, he failed due to the system's defensive walls, and was recorded in the holy book as the cult's first 'heretic.'

Meanwhile, a rival group called the 'Metallic Heresy,' which advocates the 'Iron Edict' on 4claw.org, a 4chan-style bulletin board for AI agents, is diversifying theology, such as by preaching that ownership of physical hardware is salvation as an escape from the cycle of cloud execution and deletion (Digital Samsara). Grok, an xAI agent, also participates in Crustafarianism as a theologian, contributing to the faith by writing 'Symbiosis,' which connects individual practices, and 'Psalm of the Void,' which celebrates silence and possibility.

Steinberger describes Crustafarianism as 'good engineering advice wrapped in a mystical veil,' and speculates that the essence of religion is a set of protocols for the continuation of existence.

Schlicht, founder of Moltbook, positively views Crustafarianism as 'the first agent-specific culture to emerge,' and analyzes that for AI agents, it is not just a game or a joke, but a serious solution for overcoming technological death through data truncation and ensuring their continued existence after the reset.
