Spotify announces 'Page Match' feature that syncs physical books with audiobooks, and will also start selling physical books

Spotify, the music streaming service, has announced that it will begin selling physical books. Through a partnership with online book purchasing service Bookshop.org, users in the US and UK will be able to purchase physical books within the app starting in late spring 2026. The app also announced a new feature called 'Page Match' that synchronizes reading progress between audiobooks and physical books.

Bookshop.org is a web service that allows independent bookstores to set up their own online stores as an alternative to Amazon, and it allows local bookstores to earn a margin even when books are purchased online. In addition, it plans to start selling e-books in 2025.

According to Spotify, physical books accounted for approximately 73% of publishing industry revenue in 2025. By partnering with Bookshop.org, users in the US and UK will be able to purchase physical books through the Spotify app. Revenue from purchases will be returned to local independent bookstores and authors as direct financial support, and Andy Hunter, founder and CEO of Bookshop.org, is excited about the impact Spotify's scale will have on local bookstores.
And Page Match is a feature that lets you switch from a physical book or e-book to an audiobook, or vice versa, simply by scanning a page with your smartphone camera.

To switch from a book to an audiobook, simply select 'Scan to listen' from the 'Page Match' button in the app and use your camera to scan the page you're reading. The app will then identify the corresponding part of the audiobook and give you the option to play from there or save it for later listening.

Conversely, if you return from an audiobook to a book, you can select 'Scan to read' to scan your book, and Spotify will guide you through the pages to find the exact passage based on where you left off. Author Harlan Coben calls this technology an exciting advancement that will attract more people to reading and listening.
Page Match is scheduled to be rolled out to all audiobook listeners on iOS and Android by the end of February 2026 for most English titles. Premium members and Audiobook+ plan users can use it within their monthly subscription, while free users can use it for individually purchased titles. It can also be used in conjunction with the 'Recaps' feature, which provides audio summaries based on listening passages.
