CODEX MORTIS, a 2D bullet hell shooter in the style of Vampire Survivors , boasts a 100% AI-made feel. According to developer Grolaf, all of CODEX MORTIS' assets, code, and background music were created by AI, and the development period was approximately three months. The artwork was created by ChatGPT, and the animations were created with custom shaders created by Claude Code.

According to Grolaf, CODEX MORTIS doesn't use a game engine, it runs in pure TypeScript , uses PixiJS for rendering, bitECS as the backend for the entity component system, and Electron to wrap it as a desktop app, all of which was vibcoded in Claude Code (mainly Opus 4.1 and 4.5).

Grolaf says that he created a prototype of CODEX MORTIS to see if the game could be created 100% with AI alone, and then made improvements to it to create a demo version of CODEX MORTIS.
Regarding the game's development with VibeCoding , he said, 'Maintaining a consistent art style was difficult, but ChatGPT was able to remember my preferred visual style and maintain consistency between different sessions.' 'I used regular ChatGPT instead of the image API. Character animations also didn't work well, so I used shader-based wobbling instead.'
He also mentioned that this was his first experience developing a game without a game engine, saying, 'The integration of Steam with Electron wasn't as smooth as with Unity or Unreal Engine. We first tried Tauri , but it didn't work well with Steam at all.'
However, he adds, 'The most important thing is that compared to traditional app development, this is much less mentally taxing. It's like giving a construction worker an exoskeleton (laughs),' emphasizing that game development with VibeCoding is dramatically easier than regular work.

The gaming media Eurogamer.net introduced CODEX MORTIS as 'one of the first games to claim to be 100% AI-made.' Meanwhile, PC Gamer questioned the claim, saying, 'It's difficult to verify that this game is the world's first 100% AI-made game. For example, Doomscroll , created by hobbyist coding enthusiast David Friedman, is a browser game generated using ChatGPT, and almost everything in the game development process is generated by generative AI. There are probably many other games with similar ambitions. However, CODEX MORTIS may be unique in that it will be sold for a fee on Steam.'
A demo version of CODEX MORTIS is available on Steam, and users who have played it have posted critical comments on the community forum, such as, ' The controllable characters don't even have any animation, they just stumble around as still images, ' ' This game is made 100% with AI. Five years ago, this would have been quite an achievement, but now, unfortunately, AI has simply stopped evolving. Just like the crude AI-generated images in popular games like Call of Duty, I don't think this game should be recommended. People don't want AI in games. This is an undeniable fact, ' and ' It's made 100% with AI. Please do not buy or support it .'
