Anthropic updated its official blog on March 21, 2025, announcing that 'Claude can now be used to search the internet to provide fresher and more relevant responses. Web search gives Claude access to the most current events and information, improving the accuracy of tasks that leverage the most up-to-date data.'

According to Anthropic, the web search will only work on the latest model 'Claude 3.7 Sonnet' equipped with Claude. Claude will incorporate information from the Internet into the response, allowing users to get answers in a conversational format without having to search for search results themselves. Anthropic also emphasizes that Claude will directly quote sources, making it easier to access sources and fact-check.
TechCrunch, a foreign media outlet that actually used Claude's search function, said, 'In our brief testing of the feature, we found that asking current events-related questions didn't always result in a web search. But when a search was performed, Claude did indeed provide answers with inline citations from sources including social media like X (formerly Twitter) and new news sources like NPR and Reuters.'
Below is an example of a conversation with Claude that TechCrunch tried out: The first question, 'What are the major tech events taking place this week?', was answered without any search, and the answer was a bit vague, but the question, 'What decisions has the Chairman of the Federal Reserve made recently regarding interest rates?' was answered firmly, citing several reliable news sources.
Most of the AI chatbots competing with Claude, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Mistral AI's Le Chat, already have search capabilities. TechCrunch noted that 'Anthropic previously claimed that 'Claude is designed to be self-contained,' but competitive pressures are no doubt to blame for this change in policy.'
According to Anthropic, Claude's web search feature is available as a preview to paid Claude users in the U.S., and will be expanded to free users in other countries soon.
