On November 22, 2024, Adam Mosseri, head of Threads, announced, 'We've begun testing some long-awaited improvements to Threads search and Trending Now.'

According to Mosseri, the new search feature will allow users to search for a specific date range, such as X, or to search for posts from a single account.

In addition, the trending feature, 'Trending Now,' will offer improvements such as an AI-based service that summarizes hot topics among users and an expansion of trending topics.

Prior to Threads, X launched 'Stories on X' in May 2024, where the conversational AI 'Grok' would compile trends.

As Mosseri describes it, 'long overdue,' a long-standing complaint on Threads is that the default homepage feed is filled with irrelevant and often annoying content from accounts you don't even follow.

In a separate post, Mosseri also announced that 'we're balancing our rankings to prioritize content from people you follow,' and it's believed that the recent improvements to the search and trends features are aimed at addressing these complaints and narrowing the gap with rival social media platforms.

Along with X, Bluesky is also a strong rival to Threads. Bluesky has surpassed 20 million users thanks to its unique features that allow users to choose their preferred feeds and algorithms, and is said to be gaining new users at a rate of 1 million per day.

The Verge, an IT news site, commented, 'Bluesky still has fewer users than Threads, but it's clearly moving in the right direction, which may be what's making Meta anxious.'
