Instagram starts testing 'Dislike' button on comments, not posts

It turns out that Instagram has started testing a button to express 'dislike'. The button will not be applied to posts on Instagram, but to certain comments, and in the future, comments that have had the button pressed many times may be moved to a less visible location.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, revealed on Meta's short message SNS 'Threads' on February 15, 2025 that Instagram has begun testing a new button.

The button appears next to the comment and is meant to express 'dislike'. However, the number of times it is pressed is not counted, and no one knows whether it has been pressed in the first place. Mosseri did not mention the name of the button, but he expressed the number of times it was pressed as 'dislike'.

Mosseri said the team might eventually incorporate the number of likes into comment rankings, moving comments with the most 'dislikes' to the bottom.

Developer Alessandro Paluzzi , who noticed the button shortly after testing began, posted an image of it, showing a simple down arrow that doesn't really look like a button.

On social media, buttons expressing 'I don't like it' or 'I don't like it' tend to be installed less frequently than buttons expressing 'Like' or 'Favorite it.'

One example of this in action is Reddit , where the position of topics changes depending on the ratio of 'likes' to 'dislikes.'

YouTube also has a dislike button. Note that previously, numbers were displayed for both 'likes' and 'dislikes,' but in 2021, the number of 'dislikes' was hidden.

'We hope the 'Dislike' button will help make commenting on Instagram more friendly,' Mosseri said.
