Threads rolls out custom feed creation to all users, giving users options beyond 'For You' and 'Following' feeds

Threads, a text-based social networking app similar to Twitter developed by Meta, has launched a feature to create custom feeds for any user around the world. Custom feeds are a feature that allows users to easily create feeds with specific topics or specific user profiles.

On November 16, 2024, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted on his Threads account, 'We've started testing a new feature that lets you create custom feeds for your favorite topics and profiles,' announcing that the custom feed feature is under development.

Then, on November 21, 2024, Threads announced the global release of custom feeds.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, promoted the custom feed by posting, 'If you haven't tried it yet, pull down on the Threads home screen to reveal your custom feed.'

TechCrunch noted that Threads' rapid implementation of new features is a response to Bluesky, one of its rivals, stating, 'Since the US presidential election, there has been a demand for an alternative to Elon Musk's right-leaning X, and as a result, Bluesky's user base has skyrocketed .'

Bluesky reported that the number of users reached 20 million on November 20, 2024, but Threads has more than 275 million monthly users, which is an overwhelming number among X's competitors. However, some users who were disappointed with Threads' 'non-political' policy were calling for options other than the default 'For You' and 'Following' feeds.

A feature that will be appreciated by such users is the ability to create custom feeds. Custom feeds can be created by searching for a topic, tapping the three dots that appear next to the search term while viewing the latest posts, and selecting 'Create a new feed.' To add a specific user to your feed, tap the three dots icon above the profile picture of the user you want to add on their profile screen, then tap 'Add to feed.' However, at the time of writing this article, it was not possible to create custom feeds in the Japanese version of the Threads app (iOS version).

Once you've created your custom feeds, multiple feeds will appear at the top of the screen and you can switch between them by swiping left or right.
