More than 3,000 reports of 'mysterious drone' sightings in the US spark uproar, state lawmakers call for emergency declaration



In the state of New Jersey, there have been a series of sightings of mysterious drones from mid- to late November 2024, and as of the time of writing, it has been reported that as many as 3,000 reports have been sent to the FBI's tip line. In response to this, some New Jersey lawmakers are calling for a state of emergency declaration.

Some drones spotted in New Jersey so far have been reported flying over military installations, reservoirs and critical infrastructure, but local, state and federal authorities have not revealed the identities of the drones.

According to FBI agent Robert Wheeler, the FBI set up a tip line in December 2024 and has received more than 3,000 reports of drone sightings to date. However, there has been no conclusive information to determine the identity of the drone.

'The drone is flying over sensitive infrastructure and the fact that we don't know what it is, who is behind it or what it's doing is of great concern to us, having experienced spy balloons from China,' the Morristown Daily Record reported .

New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew told Fox News, a foreign media outlet, that a reliable source had reported that 'the mysterious drones flying over New Jersey may have taken off from an Iranian mother ship anchored off the east coast of the United States.' Meanwhile, Deputy Pentagon Spokesperson Sabrina Singh said on December 11, 2024, 'There are no Iranian ships anchored off the coast of the United States, much less a mother ship that would launch a drone at the United States.'

Senator John Bramnick called for New Jersey to issue a limited emergency declaration banning all drones until the public is informed of the drone sightings. However, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy met with US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and representatives of the state legislature and state police and concluded that 'at this time, these drones do not pose a potential threat to the public.'




US Northern Command also said it had 'conducted a careful analysis of this incident in consultation with other military and interagency partners. At this time, we have not requested any assistance with these sightings.'




The Guardian, an overseas media outlet, pointed out that 'the sudden increase in drone sightings could be due to people misidentifying normal airplanes as drones or the influence of social media. ' Some people on the Internet have pointed out that 'it's just a normal airplane photographed vertically and rotated 90 degrees.'
