It has been reported that Apollo Go has been operated in nine cities, including Beijing, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Yangquan, Chongqing, and Fuzhou, including tests and commercial services, and that Wuhan, which has the largest service scale, has introduced more than 400 robot taxis. However, all of these are mainland cities, and the Hong Kong Transport Department's approval of the tests will mark the first time that Apollo Go will be running in a city outside the mainland.
The test will involve 10 vehicles and will take place in the north of Lantau Island.
According to Hong Kong local news station TVB, testing is expected to begin around the airport as early as 2024.
The Hong Kong government has been actively promoting the introduction of autonomous driving technology since 2017, but test runs, including on public roads, are now permitted thanks to a new law that came into effect in March 2024. Apollo Go will be the first service to conduct test runs under the new regulations.
