In order to obtain a license for self-driving taxi in Guangzhou, China, companies will operate self-driving for at least 24 months in China or other countries for more than 1 million km, and 200,000 km in the area designated by Guangzhou. They had to pass rigorous safety and other multi-faceted vehicle certification tests set by national inspection agencies, such as conducting test runs without accidents. Pony.ai described it as 'meeting these requirements and standards' and described itself as 'the first and only self-driving company to obtain a taxi license in China.'
With the license, Pony.ai plans to deploy 100 self-driving taxis operated by the company from May 2022 throughout Nansha District. Operating hours are from 8:30 to 22:30 and fares are based on standard Guangzhou taxi fares. Currently, it is said that a human driver will accompany it for safety, but the company plans to completely unmanned it as a short- and medium-term goal.
In addition, since Pony.ai has already obtained a fare billing permit for the self-driving taxi service in Beijing, Pony.ai has announced that it is 'currently approved for self-driving commercialization services in two major cities in China. It is the only company. ' Pony.ai plans to roll out self-driving taxi services in more cities in the future.
'Being the first self-driving car company in China to have a taxi license is a testament to Pony.ai's technical capabilities and ability to operate self-driving taxi services,' said James Penn, CEO of Pony.ai. We will continue to lead the commercialization by expanding the scale of our vehicles, providing quality travel experiences to the general public in Guangzhou, creating industry indicators for self-driving taxi services.
