'Jewels,' which were also mentioned at the September 2024 event , are digital items that viewers of vertical live streams can purchase and use to send 'gifts.'

Gifts are items that can be sent during live broadcasts and used to appeal to viewers with animations, and broadcasters who receive gifts can earn revenue in the form of 'rubies.' One ruby is worth 1 cent (about 1.5 yen), meaning that 100 rubies equals 1 dollar (about 150 yen).

Here's how it works: First, viewers purchase jewels.

Then select the gift you want to send with that jewel.

By sending gifts, fans can show their appreciation to streamers.

According to YouTube, the price of jewels varies depending on the campaign, so the amount of rubies you can earn will also fluctuate, and there is no fixed revenue portion. For three months after the implementation of jewels, YouTube plans to pay eligible creators 50% of their revenue as a bonus, up to $1,000 (about 150,000 yen) per month.

'We'll be rolling this out to eligible US creators who are part of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and have approved the Virtual Items module in YouTube Studio over the next few weeks,' YouTube said.

YouTube has previously offered 'Super Chat,' or Super Chats and 'Super Stickers,' a feature that allows viewers of live streams to support the streamer, but in response to the popularity of TikTok LIVE's gift feature, the company has decided to add a similar gift feature.

One of the big differences between Super Stickers and Gifts is that Super Stickers are displayed mainly in the chat box, while Gifts are also overlaid on the stream screen. Note that Super Stickers cannot be used on streams where Gifts are enabled.

For the time being, only US users can purchase jewels and send gifts, but all users will be able to see the gifts they send.

It is unclear whether the service will be rolled out to countries outside the US, but YouTube said it will make an announcement at a later date.
