YouTube adds new feature to 'restyle' background music atmosphere with music generation AI, changing genre while preserving vocals and lyrics of songs

Google has introduced an experimental feature to its Dream Track, a tool that creates AI-generated soundtracks for YouTube short videos, that allows some YouTube creators to 'restyle' music to any tune by entering prompts and specifying the mood of the track.

Google's 'Dream Track,' released in November 2023, is a tool implemented on YouTube that uses the music generation model ' Lyria ' developed by DeepMind to generate melodies simply by humming. In June 2024, it was reported that negotiations were underway with record companies such as Sony with the aim of a full-scale release within the year.

On November 12, 2024, YouTube added a new feature to Dream Tracks on a trial basis that allows users to restyle a small number of songs provided by music partners.

YouTube explains the feature in a statement: 'Creators in our test group can select a song, then describe how they'd like to restyle it to generate an original 30-second soundtrack for their short video.'

For example, if you want to change the genre or mood of the original song, you can simply enter the prompts you want to use to customize the song while preserving the essence of the original vocals and lyrics.

If you use a song that has been remixed using the Restyle feature, attribution to the original song will be displayed both in the short video itself and on the Audio Pivot page, making it clear that it has been restyled using AI.

Artists testing Dream Tracks include Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, and John Legend, but the specific songs that will be available for licensing in the new feature have not yet been revealed, nor is it clear when the feature will be generally available to all YouTube creators.

As with other fields where generative AI is on the rise, such as novels , illustrations , andvoices , the music sphere is also facing growing friction between AI and human artists, with major record companies including Sony suing two music-generating AI services for copyright infringement in June 2024.

In order to find a balance between responding to the inevitable spread of AI and protecting the rights of artists, YouTube has partnered with major music companies to lay out three principles, including 'responsibly embracing AI together with our music partners.'
