Since around February 2024, when using the Windows Mail app on Windows 10 and Windows 11, the message 'Try the new Outlook' has been displayed. Below is a screenshot of searching for 'Outlook' in the Windows 11 start menu, and you can see that the Outlook app says 'new.'

In the Outlook documentation, it was announced that support for the traditional 'Windows Mail' and its associated calendars and contacts will end on December 31, 2024, with the new Outlook being provided for Windows 11. According to the newly updated documentation, after support ends, it will no longer be possible to send or receive emails using Windows Mail. In addition, received emails and saved contacts will be viewable even after support ends, and the procedure for migrating to the new Outlook is also shown.

To transfer past emails from Windows Mail to the new Outlook for Windows, you must first export the email list you want to save from Windows Mail, then log in to Outlook for Windows and import the downloaded emails. For contacts, open

Windows People from Windows Mail, export the contacts, and import them in Outlook for Windows. For details on how to transfer from Windows Mail to the new Outlook for Windows, see the official support article ' Export emails and contacts from Windows Mail or People and import them into the new Outlook .'

As for the reason for ending Windows Mail and moving to Outlook, Microsoft said, 'The new Outlook for Windows has AI built in to help you create impactful, clear, and error-free messages, helping you write better emails and reminding you to follow up on important conversations. We've also made your account more accessible and efficient across all your devices, and improved integrations to make it easier to see important content, calendar events, and more,' explaining that the transition is a support move to improve convenience.

On the other hand, some users are reluctant to switch from their familiar email apps, and it has been reported that the new Outlook sends user credentials to Microsoft servers , leading to complaints about the forced transition that comes with the end of support. Technology media Neowin states, 'The new Outlook has a bad reputation for being a slow web app, lacking features, and an overall poor user experience. Microsoft is forcing the new app on all users without listening to their users, so for many people, switching to another email client will be a much better option than the flawed new Outlook.'
