Amazon also announced that it will expand Prime Air to the West Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area in Arizona on November 5, 2024. Amazon said, 'If customers in the area purchase eligible items weighing less than 5 pounds (about 2.2 kg), we can deliver them by drone within an hour.'

Deliveries in the West Valley will be made using a drone called the ' MK30 ,' which Amazon has been introducing since 2023. The MK30 is quieter than conventional delivery drones, can fly even in the rain, and has a range that is approximately twice as long.

The drones will depart from the 'Same-Day Delivery Site,' a delivery center in Tolleson, Arizona, and will fly beyond visual line of sight without an observer when delivering goods. Amazon, which has been strengthening its BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) capabilities for several years, received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in May 2024 for drone flights beyond visual line of sight, and Amazon claims that it is the first company to launch both a new facility that meets FAA requirements and a drone service equipped with beyond visual line of sight capabilities.

'Prime Air is the future of delivery services, and it's exciting to see it coming to the West Valley,' said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. 'Switching to zero-emission delivery services like Prime Air helps reduce pollution in our area and further solidifies our city as a breeding ground for future innovative technologies.'

'We look forward to sharing photos, videos, progress and other updates with you as we expand the program in the coming months and years, and to hearing feedback from our customers and community,' Amazon said.
