Amazon's drone delivery service expands coverage area after gaining approval for 'beyond visual line of sight' flights

Amazon has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly beyond visual line of sight, which will expand the coverage area of its 'Prime Air' service, which uses drones to deliver packages. At the time of writing, the service is only available in limited areas of California and Texas, but it is expected to be introduced in a wider area in the future.

According to Amazon, drones have previously been required to be flown by visual line of sight, meaning that drone movements had to be monitored by a human eye at all times. Due to these restrictions, Prime Air was only available in a very limited area.

However, Amazon's technology strategy has paid off, and the company has received approval from the FAA to fly beyond visual line of sight, meaning the delivery area in College Station, Texas, will be expanded in the future.

Amazon has spent years enhancing its drones' BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) capabilities, including obstacle detection and avoidance technology, to fly without a visual observer. Amazon demonstrated how the system is designed, operated and maintained, and how it meets specified requirements, and provided extensive analysis and test data to gain FAA approval.

The drone delivery service will begin to be fully integrated into Amazon's delivery network in the second half of 2024, enabling same-day delivery of various prizes in some areas.

'We have completed thousands of drone deliveries to date,' an Amazon spokesperson said, and the company has set a goal of delivering 500 million packages by drone per year over the next 10 years.
