Gemini app team to join Google DeepMind as part of Google restructuring



Google announced that it will transfer the development team of its AI assistant app

Gemini to Google DeepMind, a subsidiary of Google, on October 17, 2024. At the same time, it has been reported that Prabhakar Raghavan, who has been in charge of Google's search and advertising division since 2018, will be replaced.

'The Gemini app is a direct consumer interface to the Gemini model,' Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post. 'The combination of the Gemini app team, led by Sissy Xiao, with Google DeepMind, led by Demis Hassabis , will enable faster deployment of new AI models within the Gemini app, as well as improved feedback loop processes and more efficient post-training operations.'

According to Google, AI is changing more rapidly than any other technology to date, and to keep up with the pace of progress, the company has restructured its organizational structure to simplify things, including the creation of Google DeepMind and the inclusion of the Platforms and Devices team. The merger of the Gemini app team with Google DeepMind is part of that effort.



Google also announced that it would merge the

Google Assistant development team into the Platforms & Devices team, saying, 'We're consolidating our AI-powered home initiatives into one team and focusing on improving the user experience.'

The company also announced that Raghavan, who has been head of Google's search and advertising division since 2012, will step down and be replaced by Nick Fox.

Google's search and ads division is at the core of Google's search services, having developed features such as 'AI Overview' and 'Circle to Search ,' which were implemented in May 2024, as well as the AI-powered ad management tool ' P-MAX .'

Fox joined Google in 2003 and served as vice president of advertising business and Assistant products and design. He has played a major role in shaping Google's AI product roadmap, as well as leading complex initiatives such as the launch of innovative consumer products such as Google Fi and RCS messaging for the communications service. Pichai said of Fox, 'I often consult with Fox to tackle our toughest product problems. He is tenacious, agile, and optimistic, and is able to consistently create progress.'

As chief technologist, Raghavan will 'provide technical direction and leadership by working closely with Pichai and other executives to grow a culture of excellence,' Google said. Pichai thanked Raghavan and Fox for their leadership through several technology shifts and building a strong foundation for the future.
